    Great shots

Been in a gnarley slump myself. Terrible shooting

    Tail talk 😄

My setter’s long white tail sure makes it easy to spot her point. My Pop runs a gsp with perfect camo that literally disappears in the field.

    Upland hunting coat

Hunting birds here you will go thru a fair bit of thorns and briars. I use a Dan’s Hunting Gear jacket. Windproof, waterproof, briar proof. It’s legit. Check out their site https://danshuntinggear.com/category-coats-shirts.html Got a lot to choose from and it’s tuff gear made in Ohio family...

Look I really need help on this one

My last few goes have been frustrating. Seen birds but all get up out of range. Some way out of range. Every time I think, if only I could just block and have my dog work to me. At this point I’m hoping for a weather event to help me get in on them. Good luck I’ll be following along here.

Upland strap vest you can load birds in

I’ve got a Badlands vest which is great BUT…have to take it off to pocket birds…pain in the ass. Any suggestions? If you can’t pocket birds with ease don’t mention it.

    1950s Browning 16 gauge

How bout gun powder? Not labeled as toxic but I sure ain’t putting it on my Cheerios. How bout anti freeze? Certainly toxic yet it’s nowhere found in the nomenclature. Point being the hunting public needs to always put their best foot forward. I’m not sold on the requirement for non lead...

    1950s Browning 16 gauge

I don’t like the terms toxic/non-toxic for shot. It seems like a label an Anti would coin. And why not, just listen to how it sounds. Not a good look for hunting. Many ways to go with this. Lead vs steel, Traditional vs Modern, Heavy vs light. Upland vs Waterfowl. Take your pick because...

    Pro vs. Cons

I’ve settled on a fork and heavy duty scissors. I put the fork under the burr and can snip away without worrying about snipping skin. I know that just one time snipping her skin will make her scared of the process. As of now she kind of stoically accepts the process. Thank goodness dogs...

    Pro vs. Cons

We had a wire hair that was hell on cats but terrible on birds. We gave him to the neighbors!

    Chokes matter?

Shucks just go hunting. I started this thread because I was surprised and proud how well my son shot. I really don’t put much thought into chokes and I’ve never in my life asked someone what choke is in their gun. Generally speaking I’m not interested in guns that aren’t old. I am interested...

    Pro vs. Cons

CarpTom, idk if this would work for your dog but I too spent post hunt picking burrs when I first got my setter. 4th 5th hunt it was late, I was tired and put it off till morning. To my delight she had removed most if not all the burrs she could get to herself.

    Pro vs. Cons

My setter doesn’t mind the thick stuff and I’ve never shaved her nor given her a haircut. That’s false, earlier this year she had burrs so bad I to cut em out for an hour. She keeps warm even after standing chest deep in water. Do you shave your dog? Other than that our dogs sound remarkably...

    Chokes matter?

Oh! And the preserve required nothing bigger that 7 shot. We normally shoot 5’s.

    Chokes matter?

Agree BB, I’m the son of a gun nut who is partial to old shotguns. You see what I like to shoot. I reckon (and hope) my son does too.

    Chokes matter?

Great response to this thread! There were 4 hunters total, 1 dog. We had 8 pheasant, 20 quail put out. I was always in the middle with my dog, who hunted great btw. It seemed every bird flew towards my son, meaning his side of the line. I personally saw this young man have THE best day...

    Chokes matter?

It was noticeable today. And on top of it all, it seemed every bird we got up flew toward him and he dropped em one after the other. I’m one proud papa.

    Chokes matter?

They did this morning. Went to a pheasant preserve with my 16 yr old son. He hasn’t shot at a bird since Thanksgiving and he’s so so on his shooting. This morning he’s hitting everything, pheasants and quail, in front behind and sideways. Didn’t matter where, he was putting them down. I’m...
