    Opening Weekend in Kansas

Spent the weekend out in NW KS, got 3 yesterday on 5 shots and 3 today on 15+ shots. Just terrible shooting today but it was good seeing more birds.

    Hardest shot for me. You?

The one where you almost step on the bird, crap your pants when it flies 5 feet in front of your face then you try and regain your composure. Saw some tracks in the snow late last year and started following them, dog was working ahead about 20 yards on another bird. I followed the tracks from...

    How to Shoot a Bird

The empty chamber will always get you. I had decided to call it a day around 430/5 and was cleaning a couple of birds on a 25 degree day. In the middle of ripping out some guts in the yard and I heard a couple cackles...paused, heard some more cackles about 150 yards away by the cow pens. My...

    Favorite Habitat to Hunt

My favorite would be the border between a harvested corn/milo field and CRP right after a dusting of about 1 inch of snow. Nothing better than seeing the tracks in the snow to let you know that there are birds around. Last winter I was hunting in these exact conditions, saw a set of tracks go...

    Unfriendly Kansas. What's happened here?

Especially in Colby KS which is at the far western edge of the Central Time Zone. I've hunted 5-10 WIHA fields in that area over the past 2 years and have not seen any game wardens.

    Pheasant Crow Counts

I spent most of quarantine out in NW KS and did my own road survey a couple evenings in late april/early may. The males were full of testosterone and all over the roads. Even had a couple stand their ground and fluff their feathers at me as I was driving by.

New member with a new dog - Advice requested

I finally got around to taking the hunter safety course last summer in am just getting into pheasant hunting but I love it so far. Our family has some land in NW KS that I hunted 5 times last year along with some WIHA areas around it. I've read the majority of this board back to 2012 and gained...
