Jealous of you guys in pheasant country. I'm outside of Kansas City, so several hours away from any decent pheasant hunting. Tough to shoot your way out of those slumps when you only get a chance every once in a while. Love all the pics and videos you guys post. Glad you are having success...

There will always be a debate on the merit of lodges/outfitters, but I can't imagine anyone who goes that route would have a problem giving a recommendation. I can't help, but good luck and happy hunting.

I was in western KS over the weekend. Didn't see many birds and they were wild, but I flat missed one that flushed within range. I hate missing, but I'd rather miss than hit one and not find it.

I also live in KC area. I was out your way this weekend. Drove out Thursday evening. Started Friday morning on a small private patch. Saw about 15 birds, all but three were roosters. All were extremely wild. Hunted WIHA the rest of the day. Only saw birds in one other spot. 4 roosters...

My dad felt bad about it, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to mess with him.

Headed west tomorrow. Will hunt Friday and Saturday (maybe Sunday depending on results). Small amount of private but mostly public. Expectations are low, but I'm looking forward to getting out there and watching the dog work. I'll report back when I return.

Love the lanyard. We were dove hunting years ago and a flock of pigeons flew over. My dad dropped one and it had a band. I asked him if he was going to put it on his lanyard.😁

That's good advice! I learned that lesson a long time ago. Worn out and thought, no way there's a bird in there. Turned back toward the truck and had a cackling rooster "laughing at me" as he flew away.

Thickets are a good loafing spot for them.

Let me know if I'm wrong, but I think you are saying that you are new to pheasant hunting. The behavior you describe is very common. They will run whenever they can, and they will certainly almost always run into cover versus flushing in the open.

I'm confused. You say that you don't take the pheasant out after cooking, but then you said you cooked the pheasant and then removed it. What am I missing? Thanks.

As I've gotten older, I've started to enjoy going solo more. Pretty peaceful with just me and the dog.
