    Moraine Valley

Has anyone hunted at Moraine Valley? My son is at school at ISU in Bloomington and this site is about 15 minutes away. Might make a nice father / son visit :) Any information or opinions is appreciated. Bob

    Nesting conditions

I believe I heard 6/10 was about the "peak" date of the hatch. The next 5 days in highs in the low 80's, lows around 55 degrees, moisture seems to be good. I'm thinking we should have a great hatch and hopefully larger bird numbers this fall. What does everyone else think? Bob

    Wheat planted good for nesting?

After speaking to the farmer where we hunt in North Central SD, they have planted Wheat for the first time in years. My guess is because of the low corn prices? Farm is now planted in 1/3 each of corn, beans and Wheat. So my question is will planting wheat help produce more pheasants? Or, could...

    Sweet 16 switching safety?

My 73 year old father now shoots left handed due to poor eye sight in one eye. Is it possible to put the safety on the opposite side of the gun? As it stands now he has to reach around and underneath to push it in when ready to shoot. Thanks, bob

    Letter grade for season

The season is a little more than 3 weeks old. How would you rate your season thus far? C+ for me. Birds are down but not too bad, cover is sparse, weather has been pretty good except for this weekend. What are others thinking? Bob

    Hitting the road!

Packing the final few items onto the trailer for our SD trip. Hunting the North Central part of the state near Cresbard / Ipswich area West of Aberdeen. The early reports sound real promising. Dad, brother, Uncle, and 2 good friends. Should be a memorable trip. I'll report back next Friday. Good...

Has your dog ever had a bad day?

I have a 2 year old sm Munsterlander named Gunner. He has been lots of fun and for me a very good hunting dog. He points, retrieves, works close with minor corrections from the E-collar. I couldn't imagine hunting without him. I told my wife that I would give Gunner an A if I was to give him a...

    Faulkton / Cresbard

Just got back from 4 days hunting north of Faulkton. Birds are down 50% from last year IMO. However, with the crops out the birds that are there are concentrated in the remaining cover. Bird numbers are good on the private land we hunted. With 5 hunters our best strategy would be to work small...

    Good Ole Days

As a 44 year old man and father of a 16 year old boy, It is frustrating that he does not have the opportunities to hunt wild pheasants here in Illinois the way I did back in the late 70's and 80's. My father and his family hunted in Livingston County near Dwight, IL. We had a few farms which...

    Back from SD. Unbelieveable!

Hunted West of Aberdeen. 4 days 10/31 - 11/3. Anywhere between Ipswich and Cresbard. Private land mostly with some road/ditch and public hunting on first day. We have hunted this farm the last 5 years and every year is great. However, this year is the most birds we have ever seen. Limited out by...

    Recent Storms and Flooding

Talked to the farmer this am where we hunt near Ipswich / Cresbard. Said the recent storms and rain have the fields flooded. Won't be able to get the crops in the ground for weeks and he feels many pheasant nests were lost. He painted a pretty dismal picture for our area. Anyone else hearing bad...

    Need a place to stay

Our group of 5 wasn't sure that we were able to make our annual trip this year to SD because of the economy and our jobs. Decided now to make the trip only to find out our house that we rent is not available. We hunt between Ipswich and Cresbard (West of Aberdeen). If anyone has any information...
