    First day in Western Nebraska

I'm a little disappointed, I've been hearing there are more pheasants this year but my experience yesterday does not indicate that is correct. I hunted a half section of harvested milo with plenty of grain on the ground, harvested corn one one side and wheat stubble on the other side and never...

    License check. Is this legal?

Like I said in my first post, I think I could have argued and asked why he was asking for my hunting license. I wasn't out of state, not wearing orange, guns and vest were stored and out of sight, my only crime and it's not a crime was having my dogs in the truck with me, but as I mentioned, I...

    License check. Is this legal?

I guess that could have been it, I do look like a terror loving terrorist but I don’t think many of them have hunting licenses!

    License check. Is this legal?

I was in the middle of a town, about 90 miles from where I was hunting. Other than having the dogs in my pickup there was nothing to really indicate I was a hunter. My vest and gun were stowed out of sight and I wasn’t wearing orange so as far as he knew I was just a guy buying a six pack. It...

    License check. Is this legal?

A couple of years ago I stopped at a convenience store for a six pack after pheasant hunting. When I left the store a Game Warden was beside by truck and and wanted to see my license. I wasn't hunting but I did have my dogs in the front of my truck. I've been checked many times before but...

    Colorado Ballot Initiative 91

Well I’m not from CO and I can’t vote there but I find this very disturbing and disgusting. Do gooders that know nothing about game management can do a lot of harm. I was passing through Steamboat Springs a couple weeks ago and I saw something about this stapled to the outside of a...

Best way to break in new gun

Removing all lubricants and running metal on metal without any lube is a recipe for disaster.

Here's my trips I've planned for fall.

Opening weekend in central Iowa. Will go back at least once to make buying my license less painful. At least two trips to central SD and hunting everyday that I feel like it in Nebraska.

OT- homemade meals while on the road

Saturday evening of opening weekend is always aged hand cut New York strips from a Crio bag, cheesy potatoes, a fresh salad and some type of desert. Breakfast is usually bacon or sausage and eggs. Lunch is a pork fritter from a local greasy spoon or chili.

    Must Haves?

I’ve always carried a spare set hidden in my dog box. When I tried that with my new Ram it had the proximity feature activated with the fob. The spare fob was too close so anyone could unlock the truck by grabbing the door handle. It took me a while to figure out how to deactivate that!

    Must Haves?

I tend to carry way to much stuff because I’m a “what if” kind of guy but most of what I carry has came in handy for me or some people I’ve met while out and about. I have a compartment on top of my dog box that a lot of it stays in and a soft cooler holds a bunch of stuff in the back seat of...

    Grouse Hunting and Snakes

I ran into a rattlesnake in a hay meadow 20 miles north of Hyannis several years ago, sort of caught me by surprise since I wasn't expecting to see one there. The rancher who owned the ground said he'd never seen one there either. The moral of that story is they can be anywhere.

    Land prices.

I made a big mistake about 3 years ago, my buddy wanted to sell me 80 acres of rough ground that was once farmed. It was enrolled in CRP and NE Open Fields and Waters which generated enough to pay the taxes with some left over and he wanted $50K. I didn't have liquid cash since I wasn't...

    Truck shocks

I put Bilstein 5100's on my 2007 Nissan Frontier when it had 43,000 miles. I noticed improvement in handling and it still drives like new truck now with 161,000 on it. I just ordered a set of 5100's for my 2014 F-150 Lariat 4x4. $450 from Amazon and a few hours of my time my truck will be...

    Millet

The Millet they plant around here is a type of sorghum similar to milo although it doesn't get nearly as tall and is a lighter color. It is sewed, like wheat, not planted like milo. When it is harvested it is cut a couple inches off the ground so there isn't any cover for pheasants but I have...

    New dog skunk kit

I carry the Dawn dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda in a plastic shoe box with a lid that I bought in Walmart. It goes in the top of my dog box. I haven't had my dog skunked in many years but my buddies Brittany got it last year. There is a reason that I have a nice dog box in the...

    STORING SHOT SHELLS

I've got some 50+ years old shotgun shells that still work and they've been stored in an unheated garage, in the basement, in the house and are now in a storage container. In the fall I have several boxes in my truck and the temps vary from a high of well over 100* to a low of -20* ambient...

    What's in your vest?

It definitely was a freak injury, he never hunted with us again but I did see him a few years later. He had a gruesome scar and said the recovery was tough but he had good use of his arm. I always think about that when people make fun of me for carrying stuff with me and they say "I'm usually...
