I'm surprised that so many people are surprised about a group of 20 hunters. Not all that uncommon especially if they are hunting big acres and large crop fields. We usually hunt 8 to 10 in our group but have had as many as 16 in the past. Makes for great fun and a lot of good memories for all.

    Ft Pierre Grasslands

Prairie dog towns are always bad this time of year as the snakes den in them over winter. Later in season if temps get around 70F or above stay out of dog towns. Few years ago we killed a rattler in December when temps got into 70's. They weren't real active but saw a few that day loafing...

Is SD shooting itself in the foot?

I find it interesting that several people (not just on this site) think the GF&P lies to us all on a regular basis to make more money. When they did the bird reports I have always found them to be relatively accurate based on our two trips a year. Even the years that were down 30 or 40%. I do...

South Dakota Autumn hunting dreams dashed...for now

I agree with BB, our first year we just drove up and knocked on doors. Found lots of friendly people and had a great trip. You should also look into left over waterfowl tags for SD. They have limited draw which I like so everything isn't pounded. The first two weeks of season are tough when...

    Bird sightings

Quail seem to have done well. Have been seeing several good broods of young birds. Cover looking great and plenty of bugs to go around.

    Brood counts

I have always found the store owners, farmers, hotel/house rental folks, and local hunters in SD to very reliable and honest. Great place to get real info on birds in a specific area.

    Rules Changes

Sounds like Dec 1st you can start taking 4 roosters if they make the changes. It is a fact that getting the rooster to hen ratio around 13:1 helps hen survival and produces better broods in the spring.

    Rules Changes

I am surprised nobody has posted yet on the proposed changes for 2021. Longer season, 4 birds, and hunt at 10am opening week.

    Just returned from South Dakota

Good info, thanks for sharing. I talked to a farmer West Rive last week and he was seeing a lot of birds as well. Both broods and Adults. They had some hail earlier so it was good to hear!

    Mowing

Once in a while you see the waterways in fields hayed. The ditches are mowed and empty farm lots mowed for aesthetics mainly. I have also had a couple farmers tell me they mow to keep any weeds from going to seed and spreading into their crops.

    Mowing

In our area the counties still mow the rural ditches. If the county doesn't get to them quickly many of the locals will mow them anyhow.

    Mowing

Amazing how many land owners (not just farmers) mow ditches and old empty lots of land that could offer habitat for wildlife. As hunters we should all be pushing our friends, relatives, and neighbors to stop this where possible. I have gotten a few of my friends to stop the beauty mowing...

    Habitat stamp Required

If the money goes to adding new habitat and more places for people to hunt. I think I it is a great idea and very much needed. However always a little worried when we trust the government with out money as it seems to get "redirected". I am hopeful this wont be the case and we will see some...

    Brood counts

My experience has been the brood reports were very much inline with what we would see in bird numbers. Our group hunts late Oct and Dec. We get a good view with crops and without on bird numbers. I agree it is a shame they are not doing the brood reports.

    Bird sightings

Been seeing a lot of quail paired up. Nesting cover looks good in our area. Now that the rain has eased up hopefully we can get some good nesting weather.
