    ND Snow Trip.

Southerner my whole life , so it took me a while to figure out how to approach the cover . I will say that seeing tracks kept me confident and ready. I have seen a few tracks over the years in the black soil there but nothing like it shows up in the snow. Saw literally zero other hunters too...

    ND Snow Trip.

So , I usually never carry water on hunts up there. Didn't really think about everything being frozen . She ate lots of snow but definitely got plenty of water back at the truck. I have just read many times that snow melts down to about a 3rd or less of water. Thanks all for the replies.

    ND Snow Trip.

Yea , gaiters make sense now.... 16 years , first ND hunt in the snow. We hunted Kansas one year that it snowed but not near as deep.

    ND Snow Trip.

So we got to our usual hunting area in SE ND in the midst of a blinding snow. Thankfully the pub was open.... Anyhow we got up the next day to bitter cold and deep drifts on anything low lying or west facing. Hunting in knee deep snow was tough on me and my 8 month old GSP. However we found...

    Grouse hunting cover

Look for areas that when you see them you think to yourself "I sure would hate to have to walk through that'' , Then walk through it. Also look for wild grape vine , buds , or other food sources. Be prepared to bleed.

Ruff Grouse in NW Wyoming are awesome

Tats awesome! I have sage and blue grouse hunted in Central WY. A friend of mine who elk hunts in the same general area you described said the same thing. Ruffed grouse are the best eating by far!

    Birds up….

Good point , and agree. I do think that hunting can cause other mortality other than the shot killing a bird. I know here in the south , flushing a covey of quail late evening before a cold night can really hurt a covey. Id have to think that hammering sloughs in the winter there in the late...

    Birds up….

Hope these numbers are correct. This will be my 18th season hunting ND. The worst year I have seen was 2018 or 2019. Without a doubt 2007 - 2010 were the best. With all of the CRP loss , drought , harsh winters etc.... Its amazing to me that Pheasants are still stable or even improving some...

    Hello from SE NM

Id call some of the other fishing lodges in ON and see. Its their off time so id bet they'd help you out. I can point you in the right direction for Blue Grouse and Sage Grouse in Wyoming. Id say anywhere near the MN or MI borders would be a good location.

    Dusky grouse habitat

Hunted then I'm Wyoming a couple of times. We did significantly better in the afternoon. Look for sage /ground brush openings within aspen stands. Like most birds , they love some sort of edge where two covers come together. Find some grass hoppers and find them.

    Birds Around Rugby?

Depending on how early in October , PLOTS may not be open to non residents. Still plenty of other public lands in that area. Id have to say the furthest north I've seen a rattler was around Buffalo Wyoming.

Huns and quail in northern Iowa

Id say IA is the furthest south and east you could possibly find one. Has anybody ever heard of them further east? Ive shot two ever. One in Wyoming and one in North Dakota. Id consider an IA hun a trophy!!

    Lodging Options

Call a few of the bars in the area , tell them you are looking for a place to stay , they'll know someone in town with a place to rent.
