Experiences going from one bird dog to two?

I have owned 2 and 1 at times, right now 2. Last year my 8 month at the time Griffon saved 3 weekends of hunting because my Wirehair had minor injuries 3 times. That is a big plus! The pairs I had and have become really good friends which is a plus. They enjoy each other. Our family which...

Upland bird population will never fully rebound.

I have been saying this for 25 years in Iowa, it's true everywhere. The trends are not in our favor and it's not changing, Be thankful for what we have now.

    Night Vision Or Thermal

Thermals are getting popular in Iowa for yotes and coons. I know a guy that has one on a 22 mag with a suppressor and wacks coons all night long. He saw 38 in a small field by a CRP field last fall. The coons need to be thinned out in our area, they are thick.

    Deciding on breed

I got a griffon last June. They are excellent hunters and house dogs. They hunt at a nice slow pace which I like at 60. They are super smart and train well. If you want a dog to range far and run hard the griffon is not for you. As long as you brush them at least twice a month the shedding is...

    Hunting motivation

    1. Watch the dogs, only way to hunt. The connection you make with them when solo hunting is what drives me the most. 2. The feeling of freedom, takes my mind off the world. 3. The beauty of the hunt which includes the rooster flush, always awesome. 5. I solo hunt 75% however hunting with friends...

The oddest thing you have had your dog point

My dogs have pointed coons, mice, porcupines, skunks....not fun, doves, yotes but the coolest is turkeys. All eyes are wide when the classic flush occurs! Had a handful of those years ago in northern MO and Southern Ia.

    Cz sharptail reviews wanted

Not really, great gun for the price and a fun shooter. It did take me some practice and plenty of missed shots at first but now I can hit targets consistently.

    Dog's Name

This is aging me, I had 2 females at one time, viszla and German shorthair and they were named Lucy and Ethel, what a team they were.

Lots of hens - no roosters

My experience in Iowa anyway is when the temps are in the 40's and 50's the well educated roosters run like the wind. I would rather have cold temps at least for hunting pheasants.

Upland Habitat Projects for the off-season?

Scissor cut some fence line trees and make small brush piles. The birds seem to bury themselves in late winter in these and the cover grows better where the trees were. I am going to experiment and spray a few small draws to kill some broam grass and some other grass that doesn't provide much...

    Last weekend results in Iowa

Last hunt yesterday, we should have shot our limit. The birds held well, probably 15 points for the 8 month griffon pup which also scent trailed a winged rooster over 200 yards. We had a fun year, 45 roosters and 11 quail shot over my 2 dogs.
