    Pheasant conditions

Twenty years ago I started making a trip to Sand Lake up by Aberdeen to hunt the refuge when it opened after Deer season. On the northwest side part of it borders a commercial hunting operation. We would pick up a few refugees along the fence where they intersected. One time we were breaking for...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

It totally depends on how far you travel. For me it is 8 hours give or take each way. That doesn’t lend itself to day or even two day trips. Counting travel it is a 6-7 day investment regardless of how do it. I have made 4 trips in a year but now usually twice. The 150 license is the least of my...

Different types of scenting in dogs.

This was always my experience until my last Lab. He was a weird one. As a flushing Lab he ground scented everything until the age of three then he did both. This was especially true if hunting into a decent breeze. I have pictures of him standing at the beginning of the draw, head held high and...

Another first timer to SD Post

I switched to a 16 about 12-15 years ago and also have a 20 auto. Shoot Fiocci 5s year round and seam to do okay. I shoot steel 4’s when I have to. I don’t shoot at anything over 35-40 yards and I have a dog that loves to retrieve. I don’t need to kill drop a bird a 60+ yards… it’s not that...

Another first timer to SD Post

No kidding… shot tons of birds when I was a kid with a 20 gauge pump and whatever shells dad bought off the shelf. We hunted where there were a fair amount of quail so we often use 7.5 loads. No way I’m blowing my shoulder up with bazooka shells all weekend.

    Money for the birds!!

That’s awesome…. Unfortunately organizations often become trapped by their own success. It seems a unfortunately as organizations become large their thinking becomes narrow minded. They become more focused with fundraising and money to feed the beast than the end result of the efforts that...

    Accidental Pheasants in W Kansas

Enjoying reading for sure. While I am not old enough to have hunted in the 60’s, the 70’s were pretty darn good. I remember leaving around noon on Friday before the opener from eastern Kansas. Seemed like half the cars we passed were full of hunters. At Hays where we turned north, the restaurant...

Dog and I Share a Common Language

So my wife only gives extremely high value/ high quality treats. It has gotten so bad our dogs have turned into treat snobs. When the gal at the bank or hardware store tries to give them a milk bone or an old Roy, they sniff it and turn their noses up and drop it

    First time Pheasant Trip SD

I remember being at Dakota Mart in Pierre the Friday evening before the Non Resident opener back before you could get your license online. Downstairs at the sporting goods counter people were three deep all around the counter buying licenses, ammo and even guns. It was nuts but a good experience...

You will probably get different views on ammo as everyone has an opinion. I strictly shoot a 16 ga Citori on pheasant and or grouse. I shoot 2 3/4 # 5 lead and 4’s in steel. I really haven’t had an issue with either.

In areas of western Shawnee over to Lawrence we had 4-6 inches in a couple hours yesterday. Quite a bit of flash flooding.

Why did you go with the breed that you did and have you been satisfied?

She is a two year old Pudelpointer. I am more than pleased. She had a very good second year

    Unguided hunt…

That’s a good point. Funny how much different peoples experiences are when they go to SD to hunt. People here that have never been there hear stories of flushes that block out the sun and are disappointed when their experience is much tougher. Years of experience has taught me where to look and...

    My hunting buddy

I don’t know if i love hunting more now than I did when I was younger but I certainly love the dogs more and it seems to have an effect on them as they seem to be getting better as I age. My dad was a firm believer in dogs belong outside. Said you would ruin them and make them soft if you...

Governor Noem writes about her hunting dog

There is no money in being a moderate. If everyone got along and worked together for issues instead of always against, the special interest lobbyists would quit sending money. I don’t care what party she is from, the whole beating my chest to make others feel like I am a bad ass left me about 30...

Governor Noem writes about her hunting dog

The floor does get lower and lower. Reminds me of an old alcoholic I used to know. He said every time he thought he was at his bottom, he would borrow a shovel and dig a little deeper.
