    Road Etiquette

You’re not wrong about it… I don’t know what he is talking about, there is a difference between parking in the drive lane and pulling over with one wheel on the grass. # 1 when ditch hunting you typically are not far from the vehicle if something comes up. #2 You are doing what the regulations...

A good season, not without its struggles

You definitely got the bug for pheasant as most of us do. Have done a fair amount of waterfowl hunting, a little deer and enjoy getting out after some quail close to home when I can find them. Nothing gets me going more than the battle between man and dog and a rooster pheasant. I shot my first...

    Kansas First-timer

It’s that exact thing. I have always had decent dogs, meat hunters. They were not winning any ribbons but if you followed them they would take you to birds. Often times during those trips I would limit early and continue to work the dogs for them and try to tell them how to read them so they...

    Kansas First-timer

I like to think it’s due to inexperience and not just plain laziness. A few years ago I took a few guys up to South Dakota to hunt that were fairly inexperienced. I would try to put them into position to be successful and inevitably they would still just wander aimlessly.

Really not much different. If your group is small focus on field edges near cut crops, this should be more productive than just wandering out in the middle as some of the fields are very large. Your dog should tell you where to go. Pheasant relate to cover, food and water and usually the areas...

    NC Report 11/12-11/16

Nice report and great pictures. I definitely have had some slumps in the past. I don’t shoot that much anymore and can be a bit streaky. My last trip I was bad on the first day, good on the second, perfect on the third and fourth and back to so so on the last. Funny at times I make the...

    Cattails and Roosters

Nothing like a lab in the cattails. Looks like a good partner

I think goose might have been in SD last week.

I have done my share of party hunting and have taken out several novice hunters and done my best to get them on birds. As I have gotten older it is less and less appealing. That probably says more about me than anybody else

    Rain

I have hunted in many different states but Kansas roads can be the worst with moisture. I imagine it will be a mess this weekend

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

And this is the balance. I hate hunting in a coat. I usually do a base layer with multiple layers over that I can shed as needed. If it is really cold I usually go for a pair of insulated bibs with a couple sweatshirts. I can’t do a stocking cap as I will sweat too much.

    Pointing concerns

This is very true. If the birds are under pressure and it’s dry and dusty, I really have to temper my expectations. Last week I was walking a public area when she locked up on a rooster in a fence line. She held point until I walked up on her. He really had no choice as there was no where to...

    Pointing concerns

It’s the dry conditions for sure. I had a similar experience with my Pudelpointer who is a little younger than yours. Last year she was solid and holding points and I was very happy overall. Last Monday it was 80 degrees and dusty. She did point and hold a few hens, but the roosters were...

    Dealing with stickers

If you go to the horse section in a Feldman or any farm store here they sell spray de tangle in a bottle. It makes it much easier at the end of the day. Mane and tail is one of them. As stated above if you use too much they do get a bit greasy. But It is still better than burrs

Opening weekend and Monday, Shocked!!! Kimball, Chamberlain, Platte area.

Most of us travel to go there. We schedule time off, make hotel reservations, then drive a couple thousand miles to get there. The weather outside of a crippling blizzard, really doesn’t figure into it. I am of the belief that the lower numbers are financial mixed with apathy. Unless you are...

Here's a common report on any fakebook hunting page.

First off I don’t have 12 buddies Secondly we all know how it happened Years ago when my oldest son was in scouts, we had a scout leader like that. At the time I had a couple good dogs and it was still a big deal to hunt the kansas opener. I had access to some great crop/ Crp grass in north...

    Odd Encounters...

People are weird. I may stop and watch someone shooting in a public area but who walks up and asks to shoot your gun?

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

That was my thought also. It was just a bit too deep for me to handle myself, but at least it was at the end.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

As you can imagine the last few days home has been a struggle. We live on a few acres so our mornings are me on the porch drinking coffee and her out getting into trouble. Now it’s a short walk to pee then back inside. She hates the cone and is not happy.
