    Upland brush pants

I'm 6'5" 250, 36x36 normally. This is what I've worn this year and they have held up great, I've put a lot of miles into them through brush and they have no rips and are actually quite comfortable, lightweight, waterproof, warm enough. https://www.orvis.com/p/missouri-breaks-field-pants/25pf

    What's for Dinner?

I like to meal prep on Sundays and have good food the rest of the week, I can usually get a whole bird to last me 5 meals. Put a whole bird in the crockpot, I've found that about 5 hours on low is perfect - shorter and it's not done, longer and it starts falling apart and you get too many...

    Giblets and Jibblets

I keep the hearts and gizzards and throw them in a ziplock bag in the freezer. After the year, maybe for the Super Bowl or something, I'll just bread them and fry them as an appetizer/snack. Nothing special, but no different than the chicken gizzards you order as an appetizer at a restaurant...

    Black Pheasant: Wild or Stocked?

Here's what I remember.... Dog birdy for a few minutes and chasing a running bird, got into a cattail area, bird flushed out over a small pond, then in no order I remember it flying and seeing tail feathers, a dark colored bird with some red tent on it, not light colored like a hen. Didn't...

    Black Pheasant: Wild or Stocked?

I shot this black pheasant on Minnesota Public Land in 2018. It sure acted wild, but I am going to assume that it was in some way a released bird or an offspring of a released bird.

    Expectations

Not going to start a new thread for one report, but here's my most recent trip with myself and my lab, plus a fellow hunter and golden puppy. Day 1: Hunted somewhere within a 1-60 mile radius of Sioux Falls on public land. We only saw 3 roosters, 1 in range. We did have probably 100 hen...

    Surprised a bear

My dad's dog seems to like furry critters as much as feathered birds. If the dog is birdy for a few minutes and nothing flushes, it's best if we move on before we encounter a skunk or coon. I'm glad my lab seems to not care or have a nose for furry things, we've come across them but he shows...

    Thanksgiving weekend report

This is what I do with my lab and it works 95% of the time. The beep is on the dog's collar though, so if the dog does not know where you are, then the beep can alert them to start looking for you but it can't alert them to where you are actually at. This only happens when in very windy...

    Surprised a bear

I had my closest deer encounter last Friday. My lab will "false point" for about 2-3 seconds before going in for the pouncing flush on birds. He was very birdy, locked up briefly, then went in for a pounce and ended up jumping on a bedded down deer.

    End of shooting time

Just google the name of the nearest town and sunset time. "Marshall, MN Sunset". And there is your answer. Or use the weather app on your phone, they also usually list sunrise/sunset.

    Clever bird...

I think they can go underwater for short periods of time. Last winter I shot one in some cattails, after awhile my dog started digging through the decaying cattails, then trying to break the inch of ice underneath it. So I got down on my belly, broke away more ice, took off my coat, rolled up...

    Hits & Misses...

I'm starting to notice I miss more when hunting in groups, I don't think it's nerves of being around others, I think I am just a little more laxed and think, "If I miss, somebody else will back me up." A few weeks ago in SD, between some hunts by myself or when the dog and I kind of broke away...

Trip Report - WARNING - Long Read

So do I! The few times a year I hunt in groups, everybody is quick to end the hunt and hates the idea of pictures. Just spend a few extra minutes to get the right angle, lighting, etc. and you get a lifetime memory.

Opinions on January 2021 SD scouting hunt

In case you are not aware, the SD season did get extended this year till January 31, I believe. So your scouting trip could also be hunting.

    Best breed for finding cripples

I'm not a golfer, but here's my analogy. The eyes for marking is like using your driver from the teebox, the nose for pinning down the exact location is like your putter on the green.

GPS collar on a flusher dog

I just use a normal whistle... one that a referee or coach would use for sports. No, I don't feel like he has a problem finding me after I start the whistle. I only need to use it once or twice a year, and it's always in a situation where we are hunting some thick brush or something and we...

    Best breed for finding cripples

I haven't read all the responses but... a cripple = retrieve, so a retriever breed? Tough to beat a Lab when retrieving. That's not saying a lab is or isn't the best pheasant dog, but at finding a downed bird, dead or alive, Lab.

GPS collar on a flusher dog

I am 6'5" and a lot of the grass I walk in MN is almost as tall as me. Most of the time I can hear/see the grass moving from my Lab. But once or twice a year we might get separated and he's gone for 5-15 minutes. What I've learned is don't panic and he'll find his way back. I do have him...

    Average drive time to hunt

I try to get out 2x a week close to home in South Central MN for about 1-3 hours each, mostly just to work the dog. My goal is to flush a few hens and a bonus if we shoot a rooster. Some days we'll limit out easy, other times I might go an 8 hour stretch over multiple hunts without even firing...
