What’s the cover at beaver looking like?

They’ve had a lot of rain… I’d assume cover out there would be great.

    Chick Sightings?

Yea the area South down into Edwards where we’ve hunted the last few years really is unrecognizable when you think of what it used to look like. Doubt we will be back.

    Chick Sightings?

Same down here on the grasshoppers. Man your area was sure good back in the 2000s. A real shame.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Not sure if anyone was on Bowsite about a decade ago but there was another well known "master" on there back then. Always making a contribution. Maybe a cousin? Or maybe you moved up north? Turkeybowmaster was the handle I believe....

    Chick Sightings?

One of the wing boxes in northcentral Oklahoma last year indicated an estimated hatch of September 19th. Small birds right now is a good sign of continued nesting.

New to South Dakota new to bird hunting

Haven't hunted SD yet but will this November. Have hunted pheasants for many years. If I was going solo with just me and the dog I'd focus on edges if possible. Also, I'd work into the wind and trust the dog. Be quiet with doors/unloading and hollering at the dog. Go SLOW. Even an old...

    Chick Sightings?

Keep it quiet. Thats probably a pocket of birds. In all seriousness I think my Kansas pheasant hunting is done. Gonna give South Dakota a try this year. Longer drive but I have the week of thanksgiving off so I’m gonna just get up there finally. Also, we lost our Kansas spot. Leased out...

    All My Shotguns

Nothing too fancy... have a couple of Japanese A-5s. My dad gave me his 12 and I had it restored at Art's. Found a 20 that is almost identical. Have a set of 4 Ohio Ithacas (28, 20, 16, 12). I hunt pretty much all of my pheasants with that 16. I'm a lefty and put left hand safeties on them...

4, 5, or 6 shot for you early season pheasant hunters? And what choke are you shooting?

This will be my first trip to South Dakota. Have hunted Kansas for many years. Shot 6s way back in the day. Have shot 5s for years. Used an IC up until about three years ago and screwed in a modified. I may prefer it. Shoot a 16 gauge.

    Yep It Happened

Set up on some gobbling birds in the dark one morning. As daylight approached I could make out a couple of guys past my decoys across a creek. Something felt bad about it so I scooted to put a tree between us. They shot my decoys. Had I not moved I would have taken a face full of #5s.

    Bad timing

Best wishes Jet with your dog. I know several who’ve done the surgery and was a great success.

    Bad timing

Keep a close eye on em. Mine tore hers in June. Slight limp. She was 10 so surgery wasn’t for her. After a week or two of a slight limp she stopped eating and quickly wasted away. I’ll be paranoid about my other dogs for the rest of my life now. I could not justify cost of surgery at her...

    No Fall Turkey

I'm hunting a ranch in Oklahoma that had about 10 guys hunting it back in 2003-2005. Hard to say how many birds were using the place back then. Hundred or better probably. I have had it to myself the last several years. Best I can tell is there is a group of 2 jakes and 4 hens using it right...

    Pheasant Legs-butchering

You can cook a bunch of the legs or thighs in the crock pot and shred the meat. Mix with favorite sauce for barbecue sandwiches. I do this with pheasant legs and wild turkey legs. The thighs are definitely better. The lower legs don't have a lot of meat once you separate from all of the tendons.
