South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

    Big mistake, Bob.

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

In reality, I technically own all the WPAs in my area, so the statement is true. :)

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

I went through my notes on harvest numbers and location for the past 4 seasons and .724 of the birds harvested came from public land within 30 miles from home. I grew up in this area and have hunted it my entire life, so without knowing about other parts of the state, it could be possible that...

Hunting silently and way out of gun range

You thinking I should educate the birds at HH to make them a fair challenge for you and Ace?

    Black Cloud for Pheasant

It is a great, non-toxic shell for pheasants. 3" #2 Black Cloud is all I shot at pheasants for many years, until I switched to bismuth a couple years ago.

OT- homemade meals while on the road

I'm guessing that the Pheasant bacon is similar to venison bacon. Ground, mixed with pork fat, seasoned and smoked. https://www.curleyssausagekitchen.com/products/venison-bacon

Yep, the old timers and their snus! Norwegian or Swedish descendent?

    Looking for expert opinions

At 10am, I'm typically just getting back from duck hunting. I understand that a lot of guys who travel to SD come here to hunt and getting out at the opening bell is what they are going to do. I'd suggest taking a break mid afternoon to give you and the dogs a breather, so you'll all be ready...

OT- homemade meals while on the road

Copenhagen and water gets me through 95% of my hunts. As A5 mentioned, the VS/Saltines with butter chunks is the closest thing to heaven on Earth, after pheasant hunting, that you can find.

    TSS Pass-through

A5 is pretty much a pheasant philosopher. I have had a similar experience with TSS not passing through and lots of pepper sized tungsten chunks in the meat. Of course, I can't always connect the exact bird on the plate with the situation in the field, but I'm pretty confident I didn't shoot...

    Money for the birds!!

I'm shocked you chimed in on this, remy :) It is not the golden ticket. That would be a Farm Bill that pays well and demands enrollment of 100 million acres of land to be converted into CRP here in the upper Midwest. But the idea is one effort that is geared 100% in raising money to put...

    Money for the birds!!

Releasing pheasants is releasing pheasants. It's pointless and while releasing hens doesn't work, it isn't nearly as disgusting as releasing a domesticated animal and then killing it for fun. Likewise, trapping/predator control isn't going to do anything for pheasants either. Regardless, the...

    Money for the birds!!

Here you go: PF: Hi Lucas,Thanks for the note and your efforts. At this time we will decline to participate because of the link to stocking birds - with 30+ years of research on stocking issues, we know that pen-raised birds aren't capable of producing a self-sustaining population of pheasants...

    Money for the birds!!

Uff da, Remy, let me try to explain this again. Lew's Fireworks is a private business, not a habitat organization. Out of a desire for habitat, we selected one product off our shelves that would be sold exclusively as a fundraiser. I thought, "hey, this is a good idea. Imagine if 1% of the...

    Money for the birds!!

I've mentioned this a few times on here, but once again wanted to spread the word. As a business, we chose to design a product with the intention of every dollar in profit that was made in selling that product go to pheasant habitat. As you can see, a little over $25,000 has been donated so...

Excellent SD Pheasant Property for Sale

Would be tough to recoup your money. 3.6 million without any ag income and would be a challenge. Hopefully, some outfitter will buy it and litter the place with flare nares.

Pheasants in the wind, a specific situation

Wind is stupid. Used to be no wind, then they put up wind farms and created a whole crap ton of wind that I have to deal with. My personal belief is that pheasants move around a lot when it is windy as they rely on their sight as their hearing is rendered moot. I also believe that they avoid...

Early season pheasants, do they like the cattails?

While pheasants stick to cattails after the snow flies for obvious reasons, cattail sloughs are, in this pheasant hunter's opinion, important year round for the ecosystem they create. While the edges of the cattails are often flooded in spring and early summer, the vegetation surrounding the...
