    Chick Sightings?

The fields that were grazed to the quip have come back with a vengeance. The grass is waist high in most places some even shoulder high after one wet season. I think like you that the grazing and haying during the drought crushed the pheasant population. You can still find birds in pockets but...

    Chick Sightings?

Northwest…. Rained most of the spring and part of the summer then just stopped and has been hot and dry ever since.

    Chick Sightings?

I have driven 300 miles on back dirt roads going to my various chicken spots and only seen one bird fly across the road. On my walks for prairie chickens I have not seen any sign, heard crowing or cackles, or flushed a single bird. Lack of these things is very disheartening…

    Start of Prairie Chicken Season

The Saturday bird crops were full of wheat. Sunday’s were a mix of hoppers and wheat.

    Start of Prairie Chicken Season

This is what chicken country looks like. Zig zag the ridges. Sometimes they’re off on the side a bit. Sparse grass cover use what you’re looking for. If it looks like pheasant cover it’s too thick. I personally do not wear orange or bright colors. Chickens will see you coming and just...

    Start of Prairie Chicken Season

Thanks. They call it an “perch belly”. You can get them on Belgian Brownings. All of my Citori’s have English stocks. I’ve never been able to shoot a pistol grip well. My Esprit handles and shoots like a dream.

    Start of Prairie Chicken Season

That is my Citori Esprit European. It was specially made for the English market. I picture it shooting red grouse on the moors of Scotland. 😀

    Start of Prairie Chicken Season

Saturday was the PC opener for me. Saturday was a good day. Fair share of opportunities but failure to connect left my hunting partner and I with one each. Only hunted the morning as it climbed quickly to 80 degrees. Dog needed a break from the heat. Sunday was a great day. Busted a covey...

    Colorado Sage Grouse

Well it wasn’t an abscessed tooth so my Springer was raring to go. Headed up Saturday morning. Ran into 3 birds. Brought two to hand. I was surprised a the little bit of sign I saw. Usually in this area I bump at least two coveys. There was a lot of water and feed but the birds seemed to be...

    Colorado Sage Grouse

Good luck Boomer! Hope the winter wasn't too hard on them. Dog has surgery tomorrow for an abscessed tooth. Might try last day of season if the vet clears him. Otherwise I'm going to hold at home until prairie chicken season starts in Kansas.

    It has begun!

We went to our annual spot on the 1st. Bumped one covey and two single toms. Mountain got pretty hot for the dogs by one so we headed on home. Absolutely love opening day of grouse. So much fun. We found the numbers to be about what they were last year. A bit surprising with the amount of...

    Extracurricular Fun

I’ve been there but it has been a spell. Hunted around Colome. This is what I recall. Dallas is a pretty interesting place to say the least. They import talent early in the season and when the main push of hunters runs its course it slowly dwindles down to the local talent. One place has a...

    Bone Spurs - Question

I agree with Gimruis. A second opinion would definitely be an option for me. Some vets out there are quick to dismiss alternatives. Plus most vets I’ve dealt with lately tend to be a little more doom and gloom. I personally would opt for the most non surgical method available. Regards, Matt

    Precipitation

About three feet off the back step. We think it might have been an old cistern for the house. If it weren’t for all this rain it might have never made an appearance..

    Precipitation

In my neck of the woods we have had a lot of rain. Spend most of my day mowing. Seems like the grass grows 5” every night. It has also been creating sinkholes around town. This one opened up behind one of my rental places. Hope it keeps raining a bit more before the heat moves in. I have...

PF Editor Carpenter Talks Miles Afield

As a dedicated prairie chicken and Sage grouse hunter every bird I’ve killed was with boot leather. I’ve worn out more pairs of boots than shotguns chasing birds.

Our Final Hunt of the Season

Glad you got out a few more times before season closes up. Practice your gun mount in the off season. You can do that without ever leaving the house. Start slow and progressively increase your speed until it just flows. Then throw on your gear and keep practicing. After a while it will be...

    What else do you hunt?

When I’m not shooting upland birds I chase clay targets and long range paper targets. 🤣 Deer with my colonial flintlock rifle.

    Reports

On Saturday I decided pheasants one more time before the end of season. Since I’ve covered a lot of area around home I thought I’d try somewhere I haven’t been in a while so I headed south of Goodland. There wasn’t any snow so traveling on the back roads was easy. I stopped at a number of...
