    Member oldandnew

Any of you remember the guy who went by “oldandnew” on here from a few years ago? Him and I messaged a lot and he was very knowledgeable about hunting almost every state. Wondering whatever became of him. He just kinda disappeared. Used to be a pretty regular poster.

    It Looks Grim

Hunter94 hit the nail on the head when he said the wiha program is a farmer welfare program. That’s pretty damn accurate nowadays.

    It Looks Grim

They won’t ever do that. Advertising all the WIHA for unknowing out of state hunters is what brings in the money. It’a all about OOS hunters $$$. Wait until the upland forecast comes out. It will say the exact same thing it’s said for years. They largely cut and paste with a few changes.

    Sandhills

We ride to sturgis South Dakota every august. We go by way of north platte and the part of the Sandhills we go through are the driest looking I’ve seen in 7 years. There were a few, very few parts that had green. For the most part the area we rode through was short and brown.

Moved for better Hunting & Fishing

I would have to choose Salina area. You have Wilson, Milford, Tuttle, Kanopolis, glen elder, Marion, all probably within a 1.5 hour drive. Stretch that out a bit further by 30-45 mins and there is a host of other lakes as well. Plus you’re close to good upland hunting and waterfowl hunting!

Question about license and 5 day periods

So I have to drive to southwest Minnesota to pick up a dog. Was thinking since I’m going to be up there I’d do some hunting in NE South Dakota around brookings area somewhere around there anyway. I’d leave on Monday the 27th and then drive back on the 28th to hunt. If I purchased a license...

    Who let “this” dog out!!!

Years ago I was hunting with a couple guys and one of them had a big shorthair and I had my big chessie male out also. Before we got them out I asked if his male was good with other males and he said yes. Knowing mine was ok with other dogs we let them out and introduced them. Neither seemed...

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

Been hearing reports of good bird numbers this year. Most everyone I know who’s hunted so far this year have seen quite a few birds. Probably spotty but that’s the case almost every year. That hasn’t changed.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

Along with that there are trees where there never used to be. My grandparents farm north of Fall River is covered up in trees and scrub bush. Not much pasture left. We used to find several coveys of birds on it back in the 70s and 80s. They sold it and the last time I was down there it looks...

CRP May Be Hayed or Grazed

Makes me happy to hear this! Yes he’s a big good ball for sure! No quit in him that’s for sure. I’d love to go hunt some quail over him this year with you. I know of a couple wiha spots about 40 minutes south of me that usually has some nice coveys on them. I hope he points lots of birds...

CRP May Be Hayed or Grazed

Not sure why one would wait until September to put up native. I’ve had to wait until then but only due to weather or break downs. Other than that it’s up by mid July but no sooner.

CRP May Be Hayed or Grazed

We had rain when we needed it for haying. By the time it got dry the hay was already put up. My hay was probably in the top 3-4 hay seasons since I’ve had the ground-30 years now. I had a lot of hay this year and had it been baled 2 weeks earlier we coulda baled it again before fall. NE...

    Fort Pierre National Grassland

Just about anywhere on the grasslands have chickens. Going to be tough getting them pointed and flushed within range that late. Can be done though. Drive into areas you can and then walk as far in as you’re able to. The further into the grasslands the better. I mean find a big plot and go...

Not much good news in the quail forever state forecast

That’s great news! SE Kansas used to be my old quail hunting grounds back in the late 70s and 80s. Fall River area.

Kansas Trespassing Fee for Private Land

Keep your paying selves at home. Don’t make my state a pay to play like yours is and others. Kansas hunters don’t want that. We like it the old fashioned way. We have enough “guides” leading up land as it is so that they can bring oos in to kill our birds then when the season is over the...

    First time bird dog questions

Get the best bred dog you can afford with health clearances. The initial purchase of your furry friend is the cheapest. Get a good one because it’s gonna be with you for at least 10 years. You want to do all you can to insure you have as healthy a dog as you can- hence the health clearances...

    Inside or outside

Outside mostly. Heated dog houses and fans and water misting when it’s really hot. They have nice facilities at my place.
