    I love this state!

It's difficult to do both right now if you have to travel very far to hunt. Too cold to fish at first light. Days are shortest of the year. It can be done. But you better be prepared for scrambling if you want to to both in the same day.

    I love this state!

After getting my butt kicked by roosters last week, I put up the white flag for now with them. We chased walleyes instead. Absolutely froze in the boat , but the fishing temperature was turned up. Maybe start chasing feathers again when it ices up and I dont have an option. I can ice fish...

    Expectations

East river deer season ended on Sunday, so the pressure on public will recede. I spent 3 days at Chamberlain, and I did not see another hunter except for those on the pay to play places..

    I love this state!

Iowa was a nice place to live, and the Okoboji area is a tremendous place to make a living. We were there 46 years, but always wanted to retire in SD. Livin the dream now. Building a new shop on the acreage we bought and then a new house, and then look out SD. I've owned a lot of...

Hunting with a pointing dog when you're used to flushers

Take her hunting and just follow her. She's got the nose and the skills it sounds like. Drop down a choke or two over the pointer.

    Irishwhistler passed...

Sorry to hear this.. Seemed like a great guy. Nobody gets any guarantees how long we get. I've outlived my dad by 47 years, and my mom by 46. I treasure every day I'm on this side of the grass roots.

    The Tale of Two Hunts

I'm always appreciative of an invite to hunt private land, (and I'm blessed to have access to some really good stuff to hunt on my own) and used to do one big group hunt. 8 to 14 guys, corporate thing. It's just not my style. If it takes someone with a white board and a marker, or a drum...

    Prairie grass education

If you've got hunting dogs, you're definitely going to want to be able to identify Canadian wild rye, as its one of the " "mean seeds".

    Average drive time to hunt

I have found that if I dont drive at least 2 hours, I cannot shut off work enough to enjoy it. Anything less, and I feel like I should take care of business. Anything further, I tell them they have to wait.

    Shooting percentage

I really have no idea what my percentages are but feel like they improve with the season length. Recognizing my shortcomings has increased my percentages though. I've figured out that I am not a good long shot shooter, so it's a rare thing for me to shoot past 30 yards. I hunt over two...

    Average drive time to hunt

Used to be 3.5 hours to the cabin at Chamberlain. We moved from Iowa to South Dakota in September, so now it's a short two hours. One hour to good bird country.
