    Road conditions

Question for those that live or spend time west of let’s say ks highway 14. Have the roads dried up enough to get around when they are thawed out? Considering driving out Thursday but I hate not being able to get to half the spots without trying to slog thru the muddy roads to get there.

    Finally!

After one of my dogs having tplo surgery in late August we finally hit the field for an honest days hunt. Birds were pretty scarce, scratched out 1 old rooster and a quail but it was great just being out and seeing my old dogs doing what they love.

    Bad timing

It has been a very exhausting 5 days so far. Pills I just wrap up in a piece of sliced cheese and down they go. 12 weeks of keep him cooped up will probably drive us all crazy though.

    Bad timing

I did talk to them. Price was right in line with every other place I talked to. Problem was a consult was a week out and surgery likely 2-3 weeks after that. I wasn’t willing to wait that long for surgery. Guy I ended up going with did the consult and surgery same day since I was from out of town.

Successful tplo performed Friday. Now comes the hard part.

    Bad timing

Lol, it’s my dog but I can certainly see where the question came from. I pretty routinely tell my 2 sons that he is their brother and my favorite child because he doesn’t talk back and does what he’s told most of the time.

    Bad timing

Age is a concern for me as well. My dog is 9 and has a lot of miles under him but he’s in great shape otherwise. Just a freak accident so hopefully he’ll be a good candidate for surgery. Bracing really isn’t an option as he refuses to use the leg at all, he has quickly become pretty agile as a...

    Bad timing

Kstate was my first thought. My vet said he didn’t think they currently had an orthopedic surgeon on staff. I thought this was odd but will definitely check there.

    Bad timing

Not that there would ever be a good time for it but it’s looking like one of my boys has torn his acl/ccl. Do any of you guys have recommendations on surgeons? Preferably on the east half of the state but will travel for a more favorable result.

    Prairie grouse trip

I did pretty much exactly what your describing last year and had a blast, so much so that I’m going back this year. I had never seen a sharptail or hun but shot limits multiple days. Saw some amazing new country, camped out on the open prairie with just me and the dogs. It was certainly one of...

Lock and Load for the Opener

It should be the unwritten rule everywhere. I had a similar situation last weekend in Iowa and have had it happen multiple time in ks. This is the main reason why I don't hunt out west for the opener. Just not worth it to deal with the crowds.

    2022 season photos IOWA

Drove up to Iowa last Saturday. Got in a 1/2 day with nothing to show for it. Was able to locate some birds on Sunday and started to really dial them in Monday. Headed home with tired dogs and a daily limit before noon. Birds are spooky but given the amount of pressure they are getting I'm not...

    Roads

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like the minimum maintenance roads are much like western ks roads when wet. Best to avoid them till it dries out which probably won't take long as dry as everything is.

What do you hunt at 1st light?

I guess this is very dependent on where you are hunting. With kansas being 30 minutes before sunrise I'd say you are very likely to kick birds off the roost, especially when it's cold. This of course means getting up and around much earlier than most prefer but it is typically the most...

What do you hunt at 1st light?

Depends on the weather. If it is warm enough they could roost in any of the places you mentioned. Once it gets cold they'll almost always roost in the thick stuff.

Question for those familiar with Iowa. How are the roads during/after precipitation?

Anyone Use the KDWP Garmin WIHA GPS Maps?

Up until this year I’ve used the ArcGis app. It has worked really well for me in Kansas and it has a lot of other maps available, not just hunting areas. This year I bought an onX membership to use on my Montana trip. It worked well there but the problem I see is that now that I have all these...

Keeping your dog healthy during the season

I bought one of those collapsible bowls before my Montana trip this year to try out. Worked out great. It has a clip that I attached to the d ring on my vest, weighs next to nothing and I felt like I definitely wasted less water, which was at a premium as hot as it was. I may not use it much...
