    Cold weather pheasant/shooting gloves

I wear cold weather golf gloves. I believe they are Foot-Joys, around $20 for a pair. I prefer thin shooting gloves, alternating hands in pockets with hand warmers, until it gets really cold.

    Columbia Lightweight Brush Pants

I picked up a pair of Orvis Pro LT hunting pants that have a cell phone pocket. They are a lightweight brush pant. I happened to find a pair in my size online at a fly fishing store, they were 40% off so I thought I'd take a chance on them.

    2022 Season

Last Tuesday I made my way North for my first MN pheasant hunt.. It was a beautiful, cold morning. On the WMA I decided to start at, I saw two roosters, both got up out of range. At the second, larger WMA I took a shot at a bird that was probably out of range. The dogs put up a few hens, but no...

    OnX

Use it all the time. No issues, other than the crop layer isn't always accurate.

    Out of the Woodwork

The Friday before last years SD opener, I ran up to Scheels in Sioux Falls. It was quite the festive affair. I had never seen so many dogs in a Scheels store. Good luck to all of you who get to hunt tomorrow. My first chance to get out this season will be Tuesday or Wednesday in MN.

    dog vest

I run Sylmar's on my older two. No complaints, I'm sure I'll get another year or two out of them. Picked up a Scheels vest for my youngster. It covers more of the back. I have a feeling this dog will need the extra protection.

    Late Hatch Birds

If it stays dry there won't be much corn standing in this part of the state by Opening Day. Selfishly, I'd prefer the corn to stand until the first couple weekends of the season were over.

Keeping your dog healthy during the season

Good luck on your trip! I struggle to get my youngest dog to drink while we are in the field. I can call him back and fill the water bowl, and he just stares at me, whining and waiting to be released. Back at the truck he will drink like a fish. I just picked up some broth based water additive...

    An Unwanted Dog

Also, not a hunting dog story. My daughter goes to college and works at an animal shelter in N.E. Iowa. Shortly after she started working there, a chihuahua mix came in. The poor dog had been severely abused. He ended up being thrown out the window of a moving vehicle at a busy intersection...

Keeping your dog healthy during the season

I normally carry 2, 32 ounce water bottles in my vest along with a collapsible bowl. As dry as it is in these parts, I'll probably carry a third at times this season. I also keep a 5 gallon jug in the pickup. Last season was the first time I really hunted hard with dogs. A couple weeks in, I...

    Vehicles

I've got an '11 Tundra, 140,000 miles, I have yet to pull the dipstick. I'm due for an upgrade, but with the way the market is, I'm waiting. Unfortunately the new Tundra that I test drove just didn't feel like a full size pickup. I have no idea which way I will go this time around.

    Pre/Post Hunt Dog Supplements

I'm no expert, but most everything I've ever read on the subject recommends not feeding the morning of the hunt. Something about the blood needed to digest food takes blood away from muscles needed during a hunt, food takes 12 hours to digest??? Like I said, I'm no expert. My dogs get a lot of...

Prairie Chicken Report, what a great hunt!

    Next Month!!

I just can't take it much longer! I'm going to invade Minnesota to get a jump on the Iowa and Nebraska seasons. Looks like there is enough public ground within a 2 hour drive from home to justify it. I'd like to run way up North and try to find a grouse, but that will depend on a few other...
