Rain in some of pheasant country…🙏🏻🤞

My folks live in Nebraska, right across the river from Vermillion, SD. They had 2" in the gauge today. This is the third nice rain they have had in the last couple of weeks.

    Shotkam's on sale.

Not sure if anyone is interested or not, but Shotkam's are currently $100 off. I see they also have a trade-in program. I really enjoy mine.

    Lodge with wild birds

Lots of the southeast Nebraska properties seem to be a little thin on cover, but the ranches out west appear to be better options. If the weather in early September isn't blazing hot, I might try one of them for a day.

    Lodge with wild birds

While researching prairie grouse hunts, I came across this site. I see they have some properties in KS. https://landtrust.com/

    How does CREP work?

Driving between Parker and Platte last weekend led me to believe all of the CREP ground had been mowed last year. Maybe see if the old fella will trade his mower for a new set of hearing aids or dentures?

    Eating Grass….what?

Funny you should say that. My Benny, who grazes like a cow, is a very nervous dog. Cash, who just oozes self-confidence, has never eaten a blade of grass to my knowledge.

    Hunting Boots

If I didn't have a $300 per year boot allowance through work, I'm not sure I would be wearing them.

    Hunting Boots

These are what I wear, but in a composite toe. Even with the composite toe, I can say they are the most comfortable leather boot I have ever worn. https://thorogoodusa.com/1957-series-8-briar-pitstop-waterproof-moc-toe-maxwear-90-814-4141/

    Hunting Boots

Shortly after I posted this question my boots arrived. They have been through two hunting seasons, and they are my everyday work boot as well. I keep them well oiled, and they have not leaked yet. If I didn't have two brand new pairs in the closet, I would seriously consider getting my first...

    Mid-Size Pickup Truck

6'4" here, too. My wife had a 2018 4Runner and I feel your assessment is spot on. My dad is a recently retired GM of the Toyota dealership here, so we've always driven them and have had zero issues. Kind of off topic, but I don't think the new Tundra's feel like a full size pickup. Definitely...

    Eating Grass….what?

I have one that will graze like a cow, one that will occasionally eat grass, and one that I have never seen eat grass.

    GSP hunting vest

One of my springers has a deep chest and very narrow stomach. The Scheels vest fits him well.

    Most popular breeds for pheasant

Four years ago we brought home our first springer. She was going to be my fishing partner. Other than the annual opening day hunt with family, I hadn't bird hunted in probably 15 years. I had no intention of hunting her, but it turned out she was a natural hunter. Now I have 3 springers and...

    Pheasant and/or ducks?

I had to be close to 40 hunts last season. I got lazy after the first couple weeks of the season and didn't keep up with my journal, so I don't know for sure. For the record, if I hunt for a couple hours in the morning, and then go out again later in the afternoon, I count that as two hunts. I...

    Single shot guns?

Nice post, Kismet. Thanks for sharing. Everyone's situation is different. I hunt deer and turkey with a longbow, but when I'm after pheasants I've got one in the chamber and 3 in the magazine. I am fortunate to live and hunt in an area that has pretty decent wild bird numbers and enough public...

How do you store your frozen game and fish

I'm sure the newer vacuum sealers do a better job with fish. I know mine is at least 15 years old. When the one I'm using seals it's last bag, I will replace it immediately.

    2022/2023 PHEASANT Hunting Videos

On one occasion early last season, when I had all three dogs out, I dumped a bird in some pretty wooly stuff. I thought I smoked it, and I saw that Cash had a great mark on it, and was going straight to it. After what I thought had been enough time for him to find the bird (but after watching...

How do you store your frozen game and fish

I use an old Food Saver for game, meat, cheese, left overs, etc... I use it so frequently that it has its own spot on the kitchen counter. I buy the bag rolls on Amazon for a significant savings versus what you would pay for the name brand bags, and they work just as well. For fish I still use...

    Has anyone burned cattails?

The neighbors prescribed burn got into our 5 acre cattail patch and got it all. Has anyone ever burned cattails? Just wondering how fast they come back?
