Getting older and I am starting to notice it.

I'm considerably younger than you but a couple items that might help with endurance and energy. They seem to help me. Shorter hunts - long walks over uneven terrain wear you out quicker. Avoid the heat - warmer temps not only saps my dog's energy quicker, but mine too. Another item to...

    Is this Hungarian partridge?

I've been hunting Central MN for over 25 years and I've never seen one. How long ago are we talking here, like 50 years ago? For the life of me I cannot understand why the daily bag limit of those things is 5. Its a real head scratcher.

    These video guys

MN has a venison donation program specifically for instances like this. There is a list of meat lockers on their website that participate. All you have to do is tag and transport the deer (field dressed) to one of them and they do the rest. I've taken a couple of bucks to one before. Older...

Only a rube would hunt without a license.

    Fall gobblers

Wild turkey in general is not that good. I'll stick with the butterball or jennie-o from the store instead.

Hunting silently and way out of gun range

Well, you shouldn't be shooting low anyways simply for safety purposes. Also, letting others know where you are also lets the pheasants know where you are. So your entire philosophy of avoiding detection just collapsed on itself.

    Fall gobblers

That was always my thought too. Why would someone hunt a turkey in the fall when there's a dedicated spring season? There's better things to be doing in the fall...or should I say late summer based on the current weather trend.

eenie meenie miney mo... which state should we go?

I personally would not be opposed to that but the issue is that you'd be required to purchase multiple non-resident licenses to do it. That can get pretty steep if we're talking 2 or 3 states and 2 or 3 people.

eenie meenie miney mo... which state should we go?

I don't think you're gonna get a mixed bag of upland in South Dakota. Maybe more in the western half of the state besides pheasants? But for the most public hunting ground and generally speaking, numbers of pheasants, South Dakota is the answer. A "guided hunt" is going to be flare nares.

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

I get it. State agencies can see hunter participation dropping and aging. Not just pheasant hunting, but hunting in general. So they have to do something. Their jobs depend on it because most operate heavily on license revenue. I still oppose it. My son will not be participating. If he...

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

I can't say I agree with youth hunts, or special demographic hunts in general. I'm all for youth participating, but they have gone too far on special youth hunts. Early youth waterfowl hunts, early youth deer hunts, season long youth turkey hunts, etc. Its become a disadvantage for every one...

    Dealing with stickers

I think its called the Furminator. I've got one that I use on my lab to remove excess shedding hair at certain parts of the year. Works well

    2024 Upland Season

I remember it. I think it was about 5-6 years ago. A high of 67 degrees on opening day. Brutal

    2024 Upland Season

Some people seem to think that early ice fishing season is not that far off either... I realize the weather can change pretty dramatically this time of year but its going to take a massive shift in the pattern here to even consider that before 2025 at this rate.

    2024 Upland Season

I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but the forecast is showing another string of 80+ degree days later next week. Even mid 80's possible. And still no measureable rain in sight. Guess we'll just keep going with summer here.

No gloves for this guy. Prefer bare hands to operate the gun more easily. Come to think of it, I didn't wear gloves once all last season because it was so mild out.

I much prefer hunting the second half a season. Cooler weather, less corn, and far less hunters. Plus my dog is 12 now and she operates much better in colder temperatures. Even 50 degrees is too warm for her now.

South dakota (and north) roadside survey.

I can't imagine there's going to be any real hurry to harvest if the weather doesn't start changing. The price for soybeans (and corn) is terrible. Or it at least it was the last time I checked.
