To be taken with a grain of salt because its an "average" statewide. The areas I hunt are definitely later than usual but its been like that for 25 years there so maybe the time period there now is considered "normal." Standing corn in December is a magnet for pheasants. That's the first...

Can't comment on Montana, never hunted there. What I can confirm is that there's a lot of disrepectful and lazy hunters all over. Perhaps some states or localities have more than others. Making general conclusions with a broad brush without actual data is not helpful and nothing but a...

    Hunting in the hurricane

I usually have the ability to pick and choose which days I'm able to hunt, and I avoid windy days purposely. Not a big fan. Obviously if you don't have that choice, you only go when you can.

Thursday looks like a downright hurricane out there!

Not according to the USDA report. That indicates 43% harvested as of yesterday and only 1 day ahead of where it was last year at this time. Soybeans are 9 days ahead of last year though...

    If you wing a bird

Generally speaking, if you are hunting without a dog, you aren't hunting heavy cover anyways. I hunted without a dog for years before I could have one and I had to focus on specific types of habitat - mostly tree lines, thin fencelines, isolated patches, etc that were surrounded by open field...

Not sure how many of you are planning to hunt on Sunday, but it looks quite warm. Near 80 in eastern SD. Keep an eye on your 4 legged friends. Don't run them into the ground in that heat.

    Geese

Generally speaking, I think most of us would prefer to hunt when the temps are 20 degrees as opposed to when they're 80 degrees. September was essentially an extension of summer here too. And so far October is not looking like much of a fall month either.

    If you wing a bird

Sometimes you lose birds. I think we've all experienced it at some point or another. Goose looses them more than the average bear. Perhaps the super dry conditions are playing a role. If the dog can't find any fresh scent trail, the chances of stumbling exactly upon it are minimal in a field...

    Geese

I've stated this before, but regardless of what people think on climate change there is obvious data that our seasons are opening way too early these days. We just had the warmest two Septembers on record in 2023 and 2024. And yet, hunting seasons are opening up like there is nothing changing...

    Geese

Tons of resident canada geese here in MN. They are a nuisance. They shit all over the golf courses and parks and lawns. I think a fair amount of them don't even migrate south anymore either. They just hang out by the river all winter.

Also, just a reminder that starting Thursday (through Sunday) there is an early youth firearms deer season and an early antlerless deer firearms season that both run through Sunday, so additional blaze orange requirements will be in effect. Your orange had or orange patched-vest is not enough...

While I think that this forum is a good represenation of dedicated and (mostly) respectful upland hunters, I will tell you 100% with first hand experience that there are a lot of low baggers out there that don't give a shit about it. I'm sure you've encountered a few. I know I have.

    Man, how tough are dogs

The risk of the dog getting injured is the same going in and out of the truck as it is while hunting. One might argue that its even more so. If my dog is an 84 year old grandma then hunting might seem like a poor decision to begin with anyways. Which would make the truck part a moot point...

    Man, how tough are dogs

I never have and never intend to lift my dog into the truck. If she can't get in and out on her own, its time to hang it up. I don't need to get full of mud, dirt, snow, and whatever else the dog has on their underside and feet while hunting either.

I don't think its unreasonable at all to get to a spot and expect to hunt it if you're the first one there. Its downright disrepectful to show up as the second or third group and start hunting the same parcel as someone who's been waiting there for an hour or two. I would never do it, and I...

Lets be honest here, did anyone peg them to even be a playoff team this season? Everything I read and saw had them finishing last in the division. So certainly at this point they are exceeding those expectations. Plenty of season left though. Let's pump the brakes a little here.
