    Rising straight away shot

Ruffed grouse, specifically. In the woods. People who have never hunted those forest chickens are in for a surprise when they try it the first time. Hunting roosters over grassland is like shooting at a beach ball compared to a ruff in the woods.

Warmest supple gloves for 15 degree weather

I use these. I think the model is "Windstopper" and I got them at Cabela's. They have a specialized trigger finger on each one and a leather palm for grip. Its possible they may not be made anymore though, as mine are at least a decade old. Also, they are not waterproof. My hands don't...

    Yips

Someone's gotta keep the ammo companies in business other than trap shooters.

    Let's talk cattail strategies

I've also gone through multiple times. Never up to my neck, but several times up to my waist. It sucks. Ruins your day quick. Isn't worth it for me anymore so I just stay out of them until they are froze. This early cold snap we've just had hardened everything up really good like concrete...

Maybe I should focus more on the tail length when picking and choosing which roosters to hunt huh

I can confirm this too. I also went on Saturday (afternoon) for a few hours and every ditch, swamp, and drainage area was like concrete. I walked some cattails but the birds weren't in there. I found mine in grassy areas with the sun shining. One spot had about 30 but they were on a field...

    Disappointed

The one nearest me focuses on big game hunting. Specifically, archery and deer hunting. Because that's what people hunt here and it represents their largest hunter customer base. It never had much upland hunting stuff. Even before BPS bought it.

    Future of CRP ?

I haven't seen a CRP patch in the area I hunt in 15 years. However, since MN passed the mandatory buffer strip law years ago, there's been addtional habitat added along waterways, creeks, wetlands, and other drainage ditches. Its created some decent hunting opportunties, if you can obtain...

I went early on Wed afternoon and got a couple more dumb ones at the first spot. All the ground had hardened up solid which made for much easier walking. The low areas with water had enough ice to hold the dog, but not me, yet.

    Geezer Hunt

Best medical decision I've ever made thus far in my life. Had it done way back in 2006. No more windows on my face, no more wedging in contacts. Just perfect vision every single day.

North Central South Dakota Report 11/20 - 11/24

Lol when I went last Friday it was almost no challenge at all. Everyone thinks you have to head west. You don't. The primary issue is the lack of public hunting. Its all private land that you have to ask permission to hunt.

    Geezer Hunt

My Grandfather (he died of cancer in 2012) had to become a permanent poster/blocker the last few years of his life because he couldn't walk anymore. He hated it. I could tell he didn't even want to go with but we drug him along anyways. I think he got at least some satisfaction when he folded...

    Disappointed

I've never been to the original location in Nebraska but I've been to several others in MN, SD, and WI. No doubt that the acquisition of Cabela's by Bass Pro changed things. BPS pushes a lot of their in-house brands and that's because they are more profitable. The original Cabela's brand...

Count the ways ya can screw up

Making too much noise is a sure way to let every bird know you're coming before you get there. Completely preventable and avoidable too.

I was too. Started at 11 at the first spot and finished by 11:43am. Raised 13, 5 of which were roosters. They were getting up dumb and close. The entire countryside is a mudhole where I hunt. Soft, wet, sticky mud and standing water in all the ditches, canals, and cattails - lots of it...

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

I don't either. I prefer to go without if possible. I can do it down to about 35-40 degrees. Below that, I need some. I used to hunt in a bigger group of deer hunters an one of the older guys in that group NEVER wore gloves. We left the lodge one morning for our stands and it was 12...

A good season, not without its struggles

I agree, I also can recall his early struggles. Adapt and succeed (most of the time anyways).
