Am I wasting my time ?

This pond hasn’t been dry since we sold the cows. A month ago I dug an area out that held water and now it’s dry. The DNR is draining the lake and the water table goes down with it. All the nearby water sources are dry. Anyone have any experience with doing this ?

Bought my 1st chunk of land - hopefully first of many

Good deal. A permanent easement with the NRCS pays 100% of appraised value if I remember correctly. I also think a 30 year easement pays 70%.

    The USDA re CRP

You have a link ? There is (and I think for some time) an urban agriculture program, never heard of it being CRP.

    Uncommon bird dogs

I had a 1/2 Gordon Setter that was a very good hunter and farm dog.

    Cold rain

Here in NW Iowa I don’t think the hens are setting yet, still in the laying stage. If any are they have just started, I see a lot of hens in the fields.

    Spring habitat work

The local fire department came out and burned the bulk of our CRP, along with a few bonus acres. Pretty tough when it abuts so much slough and marsh.

    Albino pheasant?

I’ve told this story before, so if you’ve heard, sorry. While cutting oats for a neighbor I was coming back to the buildings on the first round, up jumps a big white rooster. Wow, I stop and watch him fly to see if he lands nearby. He goes over the horizon. I go about fifty feet more and...

    Spring habitat work

NW Iowa. The first outfit I contacted looked at it and said no thanks. The local fire department does burns but they won’t after May first and they were booked solid up until then. I‘ll get on their list next year. The big problem is both pieces butt up against state land and are cattails, no...

    Spring habitat work

I haven’t been able to find anyone to burn our CRP. Seems everyone wants to do nice 80s or quarters surrounded by crop land rather than the hard to burn places. Cant blame them, the money is the same.

    Drought

Planting corn next to a CRP piece today. About 7:00 pm at least four harems of hens came out and started feeding, along with their roosters. About 6-8 hens in each group. You could see the roosters a 1/4 mile away, they looked nearly fluorescent, the hens you could hardly make out. More hens...

    Drought

Interesting how things are different in different areas. In Iowa dry weather spells good nesting conditions. Wet is much less favorable for nesting and young survival. Of course dry for us may not be dry for others. Yes, it is dry.

    This should help expand CRP

    Good deal.

    Planting more EQUIP cover

The ground I was waiting on didn’t get accepted. The fellow got back to me yesterday, he was out with covid for some time. Middle aged guy, healthy. Now it goes to hay ground and I won’t reapply.

    Planting more EQUIP cover

I managed to get 20 more acres of EQUIP ground planted today. Still waiting on whether or not the other 20 acres got accepted. I applied last fall sometime and they can’t give me any idea if or when it will get accepted. It would have been nice to work it and seed it with the rest but no big...

SD Open Fields Doctrine soon to be gone.

I don’t give one episode of sexual intercourse what you think. I’m out, if I want to be insulted I’ll start listening to my wife. You can have run the circle jerk yourself. It‘s true what they say about one bad apple I guess. I have gained some good hunting companions from this site, they...

Sounds like you are all butt hurt. I will gladly endorse a listing of those whom report, as long as we have a list of whom is reported. I‘m thinking maybe you would top the later list. Name calling I didn’t think was allowed. Rather low don’t you think ?

    Neonictinoids in the news

These insecticides are a problem. Most I know of are seed treatments but with today’s air delivery systems on planters the chemical gets airborne. I have requested they not be applied to my seeds but to no avail. If I bought higher quantities they most likely would accommodate me. They are...

SD Open Fields Doctrine soon to be gone.

Some posts are like dog turds on a sidewalk. Yes, I can walk around them, ignore them, but they stink the place up and generally make the neighborhood look bad. On this forum I can’t pick the turd up myself, I have to report it. It’s a civic duty.

    New initiative by PF

You are not alone. I once donated to a candidate for office, seems my name was turned over to the national party and I got requests seemingly from every candidate in the nation. I no longer belong to any organization. Sorry if that offends anyone.
