    Pheasants at night

All I know is that many times I go out first thing in the morning and see them fly out of the trees, never questioned them as to how they slept. Our chickens will roost in trees and they can’t even fly !

    Pheasants at night

I see them in my grove roosting from time to time.

Private land access for a fee

I avoid the opening few days of deer season on public land, after that the frenzy tends to die down a little. Private land wouldn’t be as much of a worry, but most everyone allows deer hunting on private land so there’s that.

    Hayed Fields

I don’t reply to folks with that attitude. The folks here try to be civil. Opps, well, that doesn’t count.

    Hayed Fields

I don‘t think crop insurance has much to do with haying CRP. I would also question that habitat is CRP’s primary purpose.

    Shooting Pheasants

It’s not the ammunition or the gun, so… However, I would take the shotgun and shells to a pattern paper and see what the result is. May be the actual thrown choke is not what is written on the tin.

Private land access for a fee

Do whatever you want, don’t let others rain on your parade. I can understand a person traveling a distance and wanting to make sure they have decent hunting when they get there. Having said that, I don’t know of any directory that would give you the information. County Pheasants Forever might...

    Shooting Pheasants

Gotta’ know your limits, me that would be my maximum if they got up at forty yards. If there are lots of birds I would probably pass on it. By the time you get the shot off they will be much further if flying at all away from you. Then I try very hard to make clean kills. I use 1.25 oz of #4...

    Kepa Iowa 2021

Hey that’s great to hear. Pheasants can be hunted many ways and the way you did it is a good way for a single hunter to enjoy the sport. Many times when I was coming home from school I would walk a mile of ditches and get an hour or so of hunting in. Kepa is looking very fit, glad to hear you...

    Hayed Fields

It will be better next year. Ground that was cut for hay this year will be very good ground for nesting next year. It does reduce habit though, no doubt.

    Poly Choke Pattern

All in the eyes of the beholder. Me, I think anything with a plastic stock or camo on an upland gun is butt ugly. And don’t get me started on those shotguns with the colored receivers, unless it’s a Double Auto, then that’s cool. I have a model 12 with a polychoke, it works fine. I like the...

    Enough of the good news...

I’m very picky on the shots I take. If a bird is anywhere near the edge of what I think I can knock down I don’t shoot. I also don’t shoot through trees or such where most of the pellets aren’t going to make it. But then my hunting is short duration, out my back door, many times a season, not...

    Enough of the good news...

I have to fight the tendency to just “point and shoot”. Any type of crossing bird and I will shoot behind them. It’s hard to follow the path, catch up, lead and shoot.

Pheasant season isn’t looking too good for me now.

Boy, what a time for something like that. I imagine as much as you care for Kepa, seeing her sit out probably hurts nearly as bad. A person has to take care of themselves, there will be plenty more hunting. Be sure you follow doctor’s orders and don’t make the situation worse. Here’s hoping...

    Roadside Survey

Iowa declined a lot when the growing of oats lost favor. Planted in early April, not touched until early August, it really benefited wildlife.

    SD Resident Opener Reports?

As to the beans on public ground. Here the DNR plants beans for a couple years so they can spray roundup and control perennials like brome and thistles. Then they follow with native plantings.

    REM 1100 magnum

I take my 1100 when I will need to walk a lot, otherwise it’s my model 11. Now that’s a tank.
