    Party hunting pheasants in Iowa?

I have always known the rule. Why, I have no idea. I was surprised other states allowed it. I think it’s a good rule.

How can they hay this much public ground

Some of you might want to change the “glory hole” terminology to the more correct “honey hole”. Maybe your autocomplete function is showing it’s stripes.

    A true triple?

Closest I’ve come I guess you would call a report triple. Rooster got up and dropped him, another, and another. All from the same spot, flew the same direction and fell within maybe a ten yard circle. Hunting alone and I was done within half an hour.

How can they hay this much public ground

We are conflating two different situations. I’m not that familiar with the South Dakota situation, I have farming family out there but don’t get into the various program rules. One situation is privately owned land that is enrolled in some sort of public access program. Haying and grazing on...

How can they hay this much public ground

I totally understand the frustration. I make a good portion of my income from selling hay, the government releases this CRP and the hay market reacts. Only one year in the last several have I been able to hay CRP, and I followed the rules about not being able to sell it. I gave it to my...

    Iowa Public Land - Forever?

Land swaps are done, we traded some to the DNR years ago for some state owned land that bordered our farm. There is occasionally talk of selling some very valuable land on West Lake Okoboji the state owns.

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

Fire is about the only advantage native grasses have over brome. Burn early May (around here) and that will set the brome back and encourage the natives.

How can they hay this much public ground

Folks around here get really wound up when the DNR grazes some of their land. It’s a very common practice around here. Extremely low stocking rate of cows gives them the mix of heights they want to see. They do this mostly on pure native grass stands. There was an old farmer near here that had...

How can they hay this much public ground

It’s my understanding that the original poster is saying publicly owned land is being hayed. Is that correct? So big ag and making ends meet wouldn't have anything to do with this situation. It’s just a management decision the DNR made. Maybe I’m misunderstanding.

    question about leased ag land

Traditionally here in Iowa the tenant would be the one to grant permission, unless something is in the lease that says otherwise. I farm rented ground and rent other ground out to be farmed. In those cases you would have been the trespasser and the other folks would have been right to have...

CRP May Be Hayed or Grazed

Possibly it was a recently expired CRP contract.

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

I can only speak to the practices around here regarding the haying of state land. From what I’ve seen the DNR will hay solid stands of native grasses, spray round-up the next year and plant Round-up soybeans for two years, killing everything. Then they will plant their pollinator mix, mow for...

As I’ve said before, the loss for next year won’t be a bad as a person might think. I can understand it is discouraging now.
