    Party hunting pheasants in Iowa?

I guess we differ on the definition of greed. If a program is offered to a producer I don’t see it as greed to lawfully participate. Again, ire may be best directed at the policy and policy makers.

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

Small grains are favorable to pheasant nesting. The decline of oat and wheat production has a big effect on ground nesting birds, from what I’ve seen around here. South Dakota may have different variables.

    Party hunting pheasants in Iowa?

As I’ve said before. When there is hay to be made it is in the DNA of livestock producers to make it. One never knows what tomorrow will bring. I see the same thing, hay bales sitting for years. I say your beef (see what I did there) is with the policy makers, not the producers. Now the...

    Party hunting pheasants in Iowa?

“So greedy they bail the state owned ditches. On highways, some times the state owns 50-75 yds on each side and it is scalped. All chances to put a little back.” Like many things, greed can be in the eye of the beholder. I‘m certainly not saying my experience is universal but the folks I see...

Trying to get my nephew a bird

Wait, I thought we all agreed it wasn’t about killing the bird but watching the dogs work and being outside?

    Mowing Trails

Some CRP contracts don’t allow any trails or vehicle traffic. Might want to check.

Trying to get my nephew a bird

I’m serious about if he wants to shoot one, he may be going out because he thinks it makes others happy or it’s expected of him. Our son won’t hunt native game anymore but is willing to shoot all the “ditch chickens” he can. Peoples’ philosophies change over time.

    Climate change and breed selection

Actually good insulation helps no matter the temps. Dogs shed heat by panting, not so much through the skin. Lots of water would be the key.

When do we start the push for change?

I agree with the dicamba thing. That wasn’t thought out very well. This coming year will be my first for planting GMO soybeans. I just can no longer withstand getting dinged by the neighbor’s drift, They all do it according to label, I’m pretty certain of that. But it just can’t be predicted how...

When do we start the push for change?

I’ve read were the urban landscape has more chemicals applied than farm country per acre.

When do we start the push for change?

Federal crop insurance would be the place I would start. Many of those large operations couldn’t get the funding if crop insurance didn’t guarantee a certain level of income. There would be too much risk for lenders. Sorry if that steps on toes, just my opinion.

When do we start the push for change?

That’s pretty much what the current economic system has done to small businesses throughout the economy. I’m in agreement with you.

When do we start the push for change?

If what you say it true then we agree. I have no first hand knowledge, only speaking for the programs I have participated in here in IOWA.

When do we start the push for change?

Birdbuster: Reading comprehension was always a problem for me in school. I learned to slow down and not assume anything while reading. It has worked for me. Get to the point: Regarding “working the system“, I don’t think you are saying that a producer who signs up for a program and follows the...

When do we start the push for change?

“And for the pool reference, what if you spent your time and money to come out to my pool the state said was there but when you showed up it wasn't cold but drained?” I guess if I knew that was a possibility I wouldn’t complain. If I didn’t know that was a possibility then I would take that as...

When do we start the push for change?

Get otta here with those reasonable explanations. Not Kansas but when I was enrolled in Iowa’s walk in program any and all agricultural practices were allowed on the land. It was simply “This private land is open to public use.” Whatever was there is what you got. Birdwatchers, asparagus...

I don’t think so. The violation is clear, charging or not is up to the officer. Law enforcement don’t like “is this or is this not a violation”. They can handle “should I or should I not write a ticket”.

    Party hunting pheasants in Iowa?

Laws need to be black and white. The less they are subject to interpretation by the officer the better. One guy, one truck, 7 birds, that’s it, you’re over. My opinion. Now, a good officer should be able to have options as to if he will charge, but whether or not a violation has occurred...

    How many birds each season?

The topic of making laws and such is interesting. I have acquaintances in the UK, they can’t believe the things we get away with here on the farm. They have rules and regulations for everything, always the possibility of an inspection. I‘ll try to explain it thusly: In the UK with all the rules...
