    Relocation to south dakota

A word to folks moving to the country: Don‘t move to an agricultural area and then expect agriculture to change in some way. There will be dust, there will be smells, there will be noise at anytime day or night, there will be big, slow vehicles on the roads, there might be chemical drift. The...

Most likely a legume of some sort, I don’t think birdsfoot but could be another trefoil. Could also be some sort of vetch. The flowers and leaves would help.

    New CRP

These payment rates won’t attract many acres, they just aren’t competitive. As was said above, there will be small problematic tracts enrolled like I put in. And for sure if everyone did it there would be a huge improvement in habitat. Right now I think the days of 80s or quarters being...

    New CRP

You folks are making me out to be some sort of angel which would be wrong. Read it again, if it were out in the middle of a section it would be high producing ground, and not be enrolled at these prices. But, it gets hit by deer and the trees sap light and moisture away, it isn’t producing the...

    New CRP

Signed up a little more CRP, it is a long narrow piece next to DNR ground that gets hit hard by deer and the trees reduce production some. The soil types however are top of the list. With the payments rates I don’t think they will get much good producing ground enrolled. It would be rented on...

    Pheasants and CRP and Timber

Our CRP next to deciduous trees has fewer birds than I think it should. Evergreens and shrub trees seem to be a plus. Raccoons and such like the trees.

    Coldest hunt you've been on

Our farm borders a waterfowl refuge that is a good sized lake about 1/2 covered with cattails. No trespassing until the duck season is over. In January one year a couple of us went out, maybe minus ten or so. Anyway, I put my foot through the ice and filled my boot about 10 minutes into a 2 hour...

    Party hunting pheasants in Iowa?

We’ve kinda gone astray on the “party hunting” definition. A party of two can “party hunt”. My thinking it is the taking of game by whomever is in the group up to the limit of the total number of hunters. I don’t like it, and it isn’t legal in Iowa.

When do we start the push for change?

“ Until then I'll keep hoping we get a disease to wipe out every damn last white tail this state has. I hope and pray to see that day.” Jebus, that’s a little harsh. Why the hate ?

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

Expecting to see farmers encourage weeds is a bit of a forlorn hope. Most likely they are good for wildlife, but I wouldn’t spend much time wishing for their return.
