Here is an update on the pups. Still have 3 males that need a forever home. They will be 7 weeks old this coming Thursday and can start going to their new hunting homes then.

    Hunting motivation

When you start a puppy you have raised from it's first breath, seeing them develop into a bird crazy adult with skills that amaze me even 50 years into hunting is a treasure! Seeing them replicate what their relatives did even several generations ago is awesome. Getting birds is just gravy!

They are getting to the fun stage. My grandson was in Friday and gave them some loving. The other grandkids will get to see them tomorrow. I do still have males available.

    Added to the habitat

This spring did not offer 1 legal burn day. If the wind was down, the humidity was down even more. If we got the humidity, the wind was whipping. If we got a day that was only slightly out of prescription, the next several days were extremely high fire danger! Instead, we spent a lot of time...

    Kansas English Setter puppies

I didn't take any offense. I do tend to write like the state employee I am. If you compare AKC trial pedigrees and FDSB pedigrees you will see some difference. The breeds that are predominantly registered AKC will almost all have those championship designations. FDSB won't. I get my wife to...

    Meet Ms Remi

Whole bunch of potential in a leetle bitty package! Congrats!

Sorry for not using the established designations. I guess, when all I deal with are gundogs, I expect folks to know. Also, those folks that follow English Setter bloodlines know these names and what they represent. Further, FC and many of the other designations you list are mostly used in the...

All of the champions on the pedigree shown are Field champions. Bo won the National All-Age Championship 2 years consecutive. First setter to win it in 40 years. Insider won in All-Age and Shooting Dogs Stakes. Reroy won in the grouse trial circuit with 5 championships and 3 runner ups. A...

    Kansas English Setter puppies

Trapper and Rain put together an octet of these beauties Thursday, May 12. 5 males and 3 females took a good part of the day arriving but all are well and holding momma down by the keel! These bloodlines should hold true to their heritage. All 8 are tricolors. Males available.

    Spring Burn 2022

I'm still sitting on the fence waiting for burn weather. The humidity is going down to teens or single digits many days. Some days it bottoms out in the mid 20's. Most of the time we get a 180-degree wind switch within a day or two so things would need additional watching. Anything with a...

    Spring Burn 2022

Looks like you sure were needing the burn from the amount of ash left! The first rain or snow will take that down and within a few days grass will start showing! I was planning on over 1000 acres here, but we have been in a severe drought and the wind and humidity haven't been cooperative. I...

    Quail Symposium in August

I'm sure hoping to go. I've been to 2 before and a fella can sure learn a lot from these researchers.

Anyone adding a dog this year?

I have a litter of setters due in the second week of May and I will try my damndest to NOT keep one. I'm carrying 14 right now and they aren't getting the time they deserve. My health has slid some in the past few years and I'm sure not doing 40 long days afield any more. Hopefully the...

    It's official...sort of.

Congratulations JMc! That's an exceptional career! Enjoy the extra time you have to pursue your soul-invigorating time outdoors! Retirement is looming for me in a few years. I can't say that I'll want to retire. I just know my anatomy isn't as resilient as it once was and a younger man...

Cutting Trees (untreated) - Shooters good or bad?

Point man has it right. However, even Tordon RTU can be taken up by roots and damage or kill trees in close proximity to where you are treating stumps. I have had it stay working in the soil for 3 years, so it is not to be careless with. You might also look at Spike. It is a granular or...

Cutting Trees (untreated) - Shooters good or bad?

Expanding forestation is one of the biggest threats to grasslands in the United States. Loss of these grasslands accounts for much of the decline in our upland bird populations. Where we can, I always try to favor the grass over the trees. Forestation is probably the biggest cost in my...
