Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

Our land borders two lakes with a narrow strip and road between them at one spot. This narrow strip was called “tennis shoe alley” by the locals. Back in the day during duck season the ditch was noted for folks coming out, laying on the bank and taking passing shots at ducks going between the...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

Yeah, that’s the stuff I have an issue with. I guess some might say I have an excessively strong respect for the resource.

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

So, do you miss or just not get enough shot into them to make a kill ?

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I’m not the best wing shooter I will readily admit. I restrict my shots to those which I have a really good chance at a clean kill, maybe out to 30-40 yards. I’m also not the best judge of distances. My primary shotguns have full or modified fixed chokes, I use 2.75 inch lead 4s mostly. Pretty...

    20 guage auto?

Almost every Browning trap O/U I’ve been around has been ported. I’m not a fan. Shooting doubles maybe it has a purpose.

Anyone have bolt action 12 ga experience ?

Thanks for the replies, there are a bunch on gunbroker but most have seen some rough use, as expected. I’m looking for one that has decent metal but needs the wood refinished. I see most of them used maple or birch, many of the older ones used walnut. I guess I’m looking for one that was put...

Anyone have bolt action 12 ga experience ?

I’m always on the lookout for something to fiddle with in the shop during the winter. I like to shoot trap with old shotguns and am looking for a bolt action. Seems the Marlin goose guns bring a premium, must be a collector thing. Anyone have any advise on what to look for ? I see the JC...

Never seen this in 50 years of pheasant hunting

I put my game bag down on the porch and we had a rooster getting chased by the house cat.

Are you Break Open 2 barrel (O/U and SXS) or Autoloader guy

My 37 is picky with modern shell bases. Seems the steel bases don’t extract as well as the older brass ones, my 37 was made in the late 1940s so maybe newer ones are better. I sent it in to Diamond Gunsmithing, they helped it but there is only one shell I can shoot trap with. If I had to grab...

Are you Break Open 2 barrel (O/U and SXS) or Autoloader guy

Where does my BPS, 870, 37 and model 12 fit in ? Oh, and the JC Higgins model 20 ?

Do u shoot a second time at a bird that’s been hit?

Yes, this is me. Probably more often I take a shot at a bird wounded by a companion if it flies past me. Anyone who shoots trap knows a falling target is a difficult shot.

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Is Changing, Or Has Changed

I’m not totally sure, certainly partially true. Any time a resource is seen as plentiful and abundant less than ethical persons will engage in wasteful practices. That same person, I never met him before, most likely wouldn’t do that in Iowa when they have to work hard for a bird. When he...

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Is Changing, Or Has Changed

Hunted South Dakota once. Birds were so plentiful folks didn’t even look for them after they dropped. Granted that probably isn’t the usual experience. Enough for me.

    Trigger guard opening.

Anyone have a shotgun that has an exceptionally large trigger guard opening ? Hunting today I took my BPS because it has probably the biggest opening of my hunting shotguns. Heavy gloves were needed. If I was deciding between two shotguns, the opening size would be important to me. Companies...

    Ground-pounding opinions

Well you know it’s one of those ingrained automatic things a person does without thinking and it is hard to sit here and try and remember. I guess it depends on a lot of things. Any flush my finger is in the trigger guard, a dog getting birdy or on point the same thing. If I see right away it’s...

    Ground-pounding opinions

Two things on the safety bit. I’m fine with muzzle up or down, I’ve seen folks fall and if the muzzle is up, who knows where it goes on the way down. Muzzle down has its own problems, pointed in a safe direction is fine. I have hunted with a fellow who walks with it horizontal, an older guy. I...

How many birds do you shoot in a season?

Society really doesn’t function well if each of us can decide which regulations, or laws, we deem worthy to follow does it ? Yeah, I wouldn’t turn in the upstanding person fishing for lent, but I also wouldn’t do it myself, I’d probably give them some of mine from the freezer, then I would be...
