    The flush

I mean you have to take those shows for what they are. When I was a kid growing up old Harold Ensley wasn’t pounding public either. People lined up to have him hunt their property for the chance to be on TV. I have watched it a few times and found it tolerable. The episode where the dog dies in...

SW ND: Lots Of Corn & Seeds Still Up

You didn’t misunderstand it and I don’t know why anyone would think you were one. As any experienced hunter knows, five miles can make all the difference in the world. Consider my experience up there. I was into fair birds the first day and a half, but decided to travel 25 miles NW where I had...

    Pointer or flusher

I have seen plenty of pointers that will bust cattails all day without wearing down. I have seen others that won’t

SW ND: Lots Of Corn & Seeds Still Up

So I will tell you I didn’t shoot a limit up there by 10 but there were a couple days I didn’t start hunting before 11-1130. Had a couple days it came easy and a couple days it came hard. There were plenty of birds around but I moved around until I found them. Sounds like maybe you were locked...

Hunting the public ROW - Thoughts?

She knows the law.. she also knows she can run off plenty of people that don’t want the hassle. Maybe you need to go up there and throw her one so she mellows out a bit. Nothing like Marlboro breath in the morning

Hunting the public ROW - Thoughts?

Yeah I would let the game warden know you were being harassed. I am sure they are aware of her. Simply bullying bullshit. I had a similar experience over by Blunt northeast of Pierre some years ago. Half the hunters is SD go there because of ROW hunting

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Is Changing, Or Has Changed

So when I was in my twenties and really into bird hunting I had a lot of options. Kansas was good to great west of about Salina, I could be hunting in 3 hours, 1.5 if I went north of Topeka. I hunted North Central Missouri and south central Iowa with decent success in the late 80’s. South Dakota...

    Ground-pounding opinions

Yeah that’s me. My old Citori doesn’t always reset the safety and even after firing a ton of shells through it I have accidentally pulled up on a bird and switched it on instead of off. You would think I would not get that flustered when a bird gets up but I still do

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Is Changing, Or Has Changed

It’s the younger crowd that isn’t as interested. I have two sons aged 34 and 27. They talk about wanting to go but between work and family they aren’t that committed. It makes me sad, but we manage a trip every other year.

How many birds do you shoot in a season?

Okay I don’t think that the forum is ready for a crazy woman thread from when we were young but I have a couple that were pretty low brow from my misspent youth

    Ground-pounding opinions

Yeah when I was younger I sluiced my fair share but as I have grown older I just don’t feel the need to. If you own aggressive retrievers you really are playing with fire. I know a guy that shot his own dog and he never hunted again. Just not worth the risk to me.

One shot I whiffed on twice recently

Couple weeks ago we had one levitate in the wind between me and another guy. He was right over both of our heads and we shot four times between us. We managed to get him on the ground but he was hardly dead. Luckily my dog was watching our shooting exhibition and got right on him as he headed...

One shot I whiffed on twice recently

Everyone has their Kryponite in regards to shots. What you described left to right I am always solid on. My trouble spot is a bird that gets up in front and quarters to my left forcing me to turn around and shoot behind. I always fail to get out in front of him and have missed that shot a bunch...

How many birds do you shoot in a season?

It’s beautiful up there in eastern Oregon and I have thought the same thing myself. I travel to ND once a season and it is 12+. Used to have good hunting a couple hours away in north central Missouri/ Iowa. But I need to get 6-7 hours away anymore.

How many birds do you shoot in a season?

If you go to the Oregon page he is on there occasionally. I went up there to Bend to pick up my dog three years ago and the breeder invited me to come back and hunt that mixed bag. Unfortunately it is 16 hours or so to where he hunts so I am probably out

How many birds do you shoot in a season?

And this is what I did back when hunting 4 states for birds. I would date and mark the harvest. Legally if I possessed licenses from each state my possession limit was the cumulative of the four states, not just the state I live in. The possession and the limit travel with the license. I don’t...

How far do you let your dogs go?

Like you said earlier, this question has many correct answers. In a field in Kansas I let her get out and hunt. A quarter in Kansas might only hold a bird or two. The first time we hunted those cattails we had a guy with us that was letting his dog get 150 yards ahead. Sure he would go on point...

How far do you let your dogs go?

I think it’s that exactly. The dog moves to the outside because it’s easier to run ahead. Like you said sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Couple weeks ago we were hunting a long and thick cattail patch. There were hundreds of birds messing around in there. We hunted it 4or 5 times in...

How far do you let your dogs go?

So I can answer that… For myself I have the collar on my dog most times when she is outside. She has learned to check back in on the beep/vibration. I don’t mind her getting out a bit when the cover is light, but I see no point in her working cattails that are full of birds at 150 yards. I...
