    Family

As some have said already some are genetically inclined to be more of a gatherer than a hunter but starting young is definitely a help. Both my boys are obsessed to a point of worry sometimes now, but it comes from me. My daughter will go as a social event only. Both my boys were in a duck boat...

    Today's report

Ill admit i rarely pick up my own shells but Im trying to make a conscious effort to do it. What I do is pick up any others I find and usually can come out way ahead for the day, What Im adamant about is making sure the parking lot on any public spot is spotless before I leave it.

    Email confirmation

For the past month or so every time i come to this website I have to reconfirm my email. This may take a day or up to three for them to send me a confirmation email link. Is this just me and my computer or is this happening to everyone?

    Save the legs!

Ill have to try the slow cooker! I usually take the breast and thighs and freeze the legs and feet for raw dog treats. Ill bring about three per dog with hunting and give them each one between fields for a little boost and wait to feed until days end. They love the butchering time as well as...

    Cut Dog Pad

I bought some boots and put just the one on. Duck tape it on fairly tight without cutting circulation and looking good.

    Cut Dog Pad

I would guess this has been discussed already but I couldnt find it with the search bar. My young dog has a cut on the pad on his front foot. Not sure if it came from a coon or a sharp rock. Maybe 1/3 inch long and limps on it when on a hard surface. I bought boots Ill try on that foot but...

    Private land?

If your in decent shape and have a dog you will be fine on public. East river deer season opens 11-23 I believe so keep that in mind.

    Hunting with two dogs.

I normally always run two at a time but left an injured one home yesterday. I noticed better more controlled retrieves on two different poorly shot roosters. I thought maybe because less competition and a slower more controlled track.

    Dog Boots

Hunted the grasslands south of Williston this year and the cactus were the worst Ive seen. Bird numbers were great but moved off after the second day due to the dogs all limping. Leatherman type tool is a must.

    Non Toxic requirements

Buy steel and be done with it. Cant remember the year but believe it was the second of the new law a warden searched my whole vest and found two of a couple dozen shells were lead. $75 ticket I believe. Have not bought lead since. I use #2 or #3 3in Federals and like them for all birds I hunt...

Dog Starting Heat Cycle - Bring for SD Opener ?

I feel bad for you but Id let her sit it out. Its not good especially if you'll be hunting any public or at a hotel with other males. Just like shooting a sitting rooster or crowding someones decoys, not illegal but......

    Resident Opener

Got out yesterday and today and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of young birds seen. My son and I headed west of Sioux Falls and it looks like the flooding didn't effect the birds too bad once you were 60+miles west of town. The amount of hunters was surprising but there seemed to be...

    Dog box dimensions

NavyCheif, I couldn't add photos to the DM you sent so I'll try this route. Dimensions are 69" length x 24 tall. 22.75 wide each. Made out of 1/4 inch plywood and 1xs. Split in the middle with another door and can handle two drahts and two labs comfortably. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Badlands camping for birds

I did two years ago off exit 18 at a state campground. Showers were still on and had it all to ourselves (first week of Oct). Last week we stayed at a hotel in Sydney MT for $70.00 a night I would highly recommend. Only about 20 miles from the grasslands and we got into birds every day, LOTS of...

Another first timer to SD Post

Those Kent faststeel would be perfect for both species. The 3.5s may be overkill but Id certainly use them later in the year before buying more ammo. Youll be in prime pheasant country and have a great hunt Im sure. Dont overthink it and welcome to our state!
