    Hunting in the wind

I actually like hunting windy conditions especially partnered with cold air- I feel i can get into more birds and get more shot opportunities. The birds don’t want to be standing in it, therefore I can better predict where they are more concentrated. They will prefer a wind break or a very thick...

    Downsized Vehicle

I have an older Subaru Forester (2004)I bought used years ago as a commuter car when I was working downtown(60 miles round trip). I’d leave my 3/4 ton diesel in the driveway. To my surprise, this little car is one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. Super reliable, great fuel economy, and the...

    One thing you learned

I always like hunting bigger fields with higher or thicker grass especially late season. I would normally run 2 or 3 dogs as I feel I need more nose power and legs on the ground. This year during late season that worked against me more than it did for me. Pressured roosters already on high alert...

(?) for Hunters that Camp while hunting:

I camp from summer to late season winter. I fly fish in mountains the summer months. I hunt big game out west and bird hunt the midwest in fall to late winter. Over the years , I've gone with tents to RV's to getting a room(if its a short trip that doesn't have time restraints getting out in...

    Put corn out today.

Your cameras have a sensitivity adjustment in the settings/ menu. If you are not getting any pictures-You’ll have better luck if you bump up the sensitivity. If you are getting a ton of pictures with no game, your camera is triggered when bushes/ plants sway in the wind-you need to de-...

    Thawing out a pheasant

In most cases I leave the innards in them and hang them in my garage refrigerator for up to a week. They definitely become more tender and flavorful with age. I gut my quail immediately after shooting them then bag them for a few days before plucking or skinning.

Boot Leather , Brush and Brittany’s End of the Season

Great write up! I saw a lot of clearing on my midweek trip- it was all I could think about on my long ride home. The face of rural Kansas has changed so much since the first time I walked it with a shotgun and a bird dog in the early nineties. i was very pleased with the outcome of my last...

    Not my day.

You win some. Lose some. Shake it off and get back after them... you still have a little time! This big storm coming might produce some opportunities for you to “get even”.

    Uncapped well, dog fatality

I encountered an uncapped well on an old farmstead this season. I sort of recognized what may be in front of me so I eased up cautiously - sure enough it was a deep and dark old well. About that time, my younger speed demon shorthair blew past me... I thought to myself, “I almost lost her”. Be...

    Tough hunting

I just got back. I went into my usual areas 3 weeks ago and got into a fair amount of roosters. I went back this weekend and after 2 days we put up one hen in 2 different areas that ive done well in this season. Decided to try a whole different area for our last afternoon. Got into some hens...

To sling or not to sling

I like long hunts where I’ll walk a long ways and I also hunt with pointing breeds. Therefore, slings on all my upland autos make sense for me.
