My bad, don’t know about the hotels…they may be…I’ve just noticed fewer hunters…at least in my areas…I ask the C store cashiers, bars, vet clinic…most agree hunter #’s are soft for the time of year…for sure pretty busy first few weeks, but not as bad as last year…you’re right, general travel...

Good advice, I’m based 20-25 miles from Mitchell, and hunting pressure has been more modest than most years…just got home 2 days ago, I couldn’t believe the modest pressure, especially with the nice weather. It was deer opener, but I’m always out there that weekend. I threw out many...

I spend about $1000 annually for my portion of the food plots on my ground, as well as periodic spraying of Canadian thistle…and my portion of the taxes comes to $1300…$2300….I don’t shoot many birds on my own ground, some, for sure…but I could use that $ for land access…probably what will...

My goal isn’t to spend as little $ as possible, no matter the activity, or aspect of life. But if I stayed in the nearest town that has motels, restaurants, etc, and I’m splitting a room with a pal, I’m quickly at $100/day factoring in fuel, eating dinner out, etc. so my land access is...

I’m simply stating the obvious, that lots of guys routinely drop big $ to recreate, and yes, all those things can be done inexpensively as well. There’s a market for everything, including guys that want to travel to Gucci lodges and shoot released birds. To each his own! They’re not crowding...

Golfing trips, downhill skiing trips, fly-in fishing trips…nothing’s cheap…I don’t do those things, but know people who do…$1,000/day when it’s all lumped together? I suppose…travel, lodging, food/booze, green fees, lift tickets, etc, etc…

The first few weeks of the season, I stay in a smallish lodge my farmer friend finished off for us last year…very nice, we do our own cooking, and don’t have to run back and forth to town(s) 20-30 miles away and stay in motels and eat out…we give him $75/nite per guy. I have land 8 miles away...

I’ve been focusing on “micro covers”, too…size of a garage, a house, a cul de sac,…anything in the middle of a picked corn field, like A5 sweet 16 is saying…control the situation, keep the birds contained…

In a perfect world you’d hunt some Milo or sorghum food plots…narrow rectangular strips, not too tall so the boys can see what’s happening…attracts the birds pretty well…good, stout cover…have one blocker at the end…lots of safety discussions about when it’s safe to shoot!

There are many Hutterite colonies in the area, including the upland colony near artesian…go ask for hunting permission, it’s a trip seeing these colonies and meeting them! That’s up to you, very cool area, not sure what the situation is this time of year…what’s open, etc…I associate that area with summer activities. A ranger is an ATV? I don’t think I’d be dragging that with, don’t know it’d really help with the hunting…I could be wrong! The days are...
