Hunting the public ROW - Thoughts?

I just consulted the regs re: road hunting…looks to me the two times you cannot shoot over the adjacent land is if it’s a federal refuge or tribal lands…I could be wrong, may have missed something. Page 65 of the hunting regs.

I spend a lot of time looking down…love that shooting streak!!! Very cool…nice gun!!!

    How’s your shooting been?

I think of goose as our mascot, of sorts…maybe reverse mascot? Just do the opposite of what he advises…keep dogs in crates, shoot quality ammo, pay a farmer now and again for access when good habitat has been cultivated, shoot birds that are feathered and colored no matter their size, etc, etc…😁

Are you better at sporting clays or wild birds?

I’m a I/C guy…a few years ago I used a skeet aftermarket tube til the end of the SD season…with great results! I will take a LM tube with, but rarely put it in…

" Im to old, my bird hunting and bird dog owning days are over "

Can’t you just downsize the type of hunt? The cover? The distance? The hours? I’ve taken to hunting “micro covers” the past few years…much fun! More productive by far! Easier on me and the dogs! Easier to recover the birds!

    How’s your hearing????

They claim 33 Db of protection, not sure how that compares with the $500 or $1000 models???

    How’s your hearing????

My ears rang for 6+ months after the ‘21/22 season…not kidding! Started using these, no issues….are there better ones out there??? Most certainly. When I shoot clays, I wear the big ear protection deal…but for my upland hunting, which commonly can be 10, 15, 20 shots, sometimes more on group...

Are you better at sporting clays or wild birds?

Those close shots, our patterns are pretty small yet…even with Cyl or IC…I’m shocked how many birds fall at 30-40 yards…and further…my sweet spot I’d say is 25-35 yards…maybe 30-40…

Check out safariland at Cabela’s for $25.,,these may not be the type you’re looking for…but I never wore any until 3-4 years go…huge step!!!! Major improvement !!

    How’s your hearing????

I wear $25 ear plugs that orvis used to sell…they’re made by a company that still makes them and sells them for about $20…available through many online retailers…probably not the best, but I won’t step in the field without them…I can hear grass moving, but they have 33 whatever u call it in...

Are you better at sporting clays or wild birds?

Right…that’s why I mentioned intermediate in difficulty course…50 targets, vs 50 wild birds, however long that takes…some presentations will be windy, and/or past 30 yards…if u had to guess, what scenario do you do better at? I’ve killed about 40 pheasants this season, a few were in super windy...

    How’s your hearing????

I’ve been hunting mostly with older guys for the past 30 years…some younger, not many…lots my age…but mostly older…10, 20, 30 years…I’ve seen hundreds of close flushes over the decades that go totally unnoticed…my hearing is pretty good, and I attribute that to birds in the bag big time! I’d...

Are you better at sporting clays or wild birds?

I miss birds, as well as clays…but sharpies and roosters aren’t too tough for me…Huns, when they covey flush, give me fits, but I’ve been doing better with them the past few years, but I had fewer hun contacts this fall…

Do u shoot a second time at a bird that’s been hit?

No, I honestly haven’t vested a bird that’s been “shot to shit”…I’ve cleaned about 40 season to date. Historically, with several hunters in the field, it’s always been commonplace for multiple hunters to shoot at the same bird…I’m sure I’ve been part of dozens and dozens of birds that have been...

    Copper Shot?

I don’t know, but after reading the thread about copper shot a few months ago, I asked a us f & w agent I bumped into at a gas station, and it’s not an approved non toxic shot at this point

    28 gauge

Good luck, and good for you. To me, it’s like paying to golf on a great private course vs playing the muni…not a golfer, but I get it.
