Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I’ve commented 10 times thus far this season on this forum, but I’ve NEVER shot so many first year birds…and so few 2+ year old birds…the first hatch appears to have been outstanding…well colored & feathered, but small birds, small spurs…maybe bigger vs a month ago, but not big, older birds…good...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I have a good friend who hunts a lot in MN, not far west from the twin cities…he doesn’t see many birds of either sex…maybe a different approach is called for with so few birds around? Dunno.

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

We commented at the end of my last trip, 5 days ago, the strong rooster #’s vs hens….seems close to 50/50…2 buddies were hunting my field 3 weeks ago and saw about 5 roosters and 40-45 hens…40 minute walk…then, 11/8, after 3” of snow fell, my farmer friend who has the fields north and south of...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

Roosters outcompete hens for food in the wintertime, especially in severe winters…going into a bad winter with too many roosters is commonly viewed as a negative…one rooster can breed tens and tens of hens come spring…doesn’t take that many to get it done…having said all that, I visit my area...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

Landowners who own the major “honey holes”traditionally host “rooster reduction” hunts in my area the last week or two of the season…been part of many of them over the years…

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

Most years, maybe every year, in the 33 I’ve hunted where I do, the rooster #’s are strong come winter time, and it’s commonly discussed that it would be wise to harvest more of them for the hens’ benefit. My empirical data, and what I’ve read, suggests that harvesting roosters isn’t a...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I don’t count lost birds as part of my limit….many years, most?, we always comment at the rooster #’s and that hens are better off with fewer roosters around…if bird #’s were down, and it was helpful to conserve roosters, I’d consider counting lost birds as part of my limit. Hasn’t been the case…

PF has come up, and invariably it gets bashed by a healthy % of those chiming in…I’ve got the paperwork on my counter now, hard to imagine it not being a decent “value” with the goodies they throw in…knife? Cooler? Etc…hard to imagine you’re doing harm by supporting them…but some do feel that...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

When I read your opening post on this thread you created, it was pretty clear where you were heading…just come right out and state your position…I don’t disagree with you, but I’ve been around these forums long enough to know it’s pretty difficult changing other people’s ways or beliefs. And...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I’m personally not a farmer, and don’t do the actual fieldwork, but I bought a 1/4 of land 25 years ago and got it enrolled in a perpetual conservation easement (WRP) about 20 years ago. It’ll be the way it is forever, can never be farmed, developed, etc. I love that. Long after I’m gone...

What do you lose most often?

I’ve seen scenarios where birds were lost from vests while hunting…1 or 2 times with sharptails, at least twice with pheasants…pretty sure by backtracking they were found. This fall, sharptail hunting, my buddy thought it went into the game bag, but I think his vest isn’t technically connected...

What do you lose most often?

Oh, I lost my (then) 9.5 year old yellow lab Lena a year ago…in my field, quarter section of mostly grass…she’s a bit hard of hearing…blowing 25, gusting 35+…basically dark, I’m gonna sit in the truck all night and honk the horn and intermittently get out and walk more circles in the field…what...
