    Chick Sightings?

Ran my first county brood survey this morning. First sighting was 4 hen turkeys. The second was a single male bobwhite. Did get to see 2 jackrabbits, not on the survey, but a nice rarity! Had a hen pheasant with 2-7 week old chicks. We couldn't find any more than the 2 and they could fly...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

I'm behind. Got another .89 Saturday and .57 so far this morning. Glad it is coming in smaller amounts. It could really flood if we were to get a big one. I'm up to 8.2 for June so far! Not going to complain in light of the 2-3 years before now.

No, it is her third. I expect it is caused by her constipation. On a brighter note, another .50 inches of rain last night.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Hard to enjoy the tough ones. Has 2 pups waste away last night. Hate to have things happen that have no reasonable cause.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Thanks Chessie! I may be getting old, but these all night whelping experiences are really testing my metal. The world is full of firsts! This female went two nights nesting and WAY after all the vet offices closed she had been in labor for hours and still hadn't given one push to indicate...

How is everyone's spring habitat projects going?

If you want birds, the weeds are just as important as the grass as long as they are not noxious.

How is everyone's spring habitat projects going?

I hope you got into the 36 page portion of it. The left orange tab brings that up. It's what I'm using for my fire and grazing regime. Of course I am stocking a bit lighter than the neighbors as I am not only trying to benefit bobwhite but also whitetail, turkey, etc.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Yeah, Maynard, I'd sure like to see some population numbers take an upswing! It's been a tough few years. My deer have made some progress, but most everything else hasn't. Had walnuts all over the yard and never saw any squirrel activity. Turkeys are around, but not in the numbers we had a...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Added 1.02 to the 3.28 for a total of 4.3 inches this month! That's sure a change.

How is everyone's spring habitat projects going?

Thanks for the questions LJF! There are many ways to graze to benefit bobwhite. In general, if you are favoring the NWSG ecosystem with whatever grazing system you use, you are probably benefitting bobwhite. Pheasants are not as prairie obligate as quail are, so most of their management will...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Finished the light of day yesterday at 1.65 total. Overnight since I dumped that out of the rain gauge we've had another 1.63. THAT ought to help!

How is everyone's spring habitat projects going?

We've been mostly at a complete standstill here. The severe fire danger this spring prevented me from burning anything. I did get 130-160 acres burned by a wildfire that started on the highway and ran 4 miles north in 50 mph winds before running into wheat ground and dying. We spent a good...
