    Hearing protection

My ears ring badly too. Hearing protection is only effective if it is worn. I use the Ear Shield and have found that I wore them through all my hunting this fall, including dove, grouse, duck, and pheasant hunting.

    2023 Season

I have done this often, I do not recall any burnt skin.

    2023 Season

Here is a solution that I have found: Pick up some of the disposable handwarmers, or better yet the toe warmers (the ones with the adhesive). Using athletic tape, I secure the hand/toe warmers to the inside of my wrists. There are blood vessels near the surface at the wrist. The blood...

    2023 Season

I have been experiencing my slowest season in SE Minnesota. I have lived her for 5 years. Compared to previous seasons, I am flushing very few birds. Last evening, I got out for the golden hour on a piece of public land. My dog, Darby, did an outstanding job. We flushed 3 hens and one...

    Bacon Ranch Pheasant Burger Sandwich

If you already have a KitchenAid, consider purchasing the meat grinder attachment for it. They run about $40 and work better than most household grinders. https://www.target.com/p/kitchenaid-food-grinder-attachment-ksmfga/-/A-79181975

    Bird limits

It works out better for the critters if you use nontoxic shot.

    Bacon Ranch Pheasant Burger Sandwich

After reading the opening post, I picked up some bacon and ground it with a pheasant breast. This is delicious. Thanks for posting.

    Hearing protection

I have hearing loss and tinnitus. I am a man of limited financial means and I hunt and fish with my disposable income. I have tried several electronic ear muffs and do agree that the wind generated noise is unbearable. I now wear Sensgard Ear Shields. Several of the guys that I hunt with now...

    Bismuth #3 shot

I purchased two 25 round boxes of #3 bismuth for my two brothers. The stuff was on closeout at Scheels a few weeks back. They used them in Iowa last weekend. Both shot several birds without complaints.

    SXS shotguns

I own two sxs shotguns. I purchased a 16 gauge Stevens 5100 at a garage sale several years ago for $100. The left muzzle was damaged. I tapped an appropriate size socket into the muzzle to make it concentric, but it still did not shoot to point of aim. I then removed some metal from the...

Unintended Consequences of being a Pheasant Hunter

I have two observations of negative consequences of my pheasant hunting. I have started running my dog on cool mornings these past two weeks. 1. A couple of nights ago, I put my cell phone on the charger when I went to bed. When I got up in the morning, it had not charged. It turns out that...

    Prairie Chicken

You likely checked the website before this year's drawing results were posted. I saw the same thing earlier but did not draw this year after the new drawing results were posted. Do not be irritated, enjoy your hunt.

    Flying your game

Put frozen birds in your checked bags. Hope they do not lose your luggage and find it two weeks later. Happened to a friend.

    Prairie Chicken

Are you sure this is true? Can you randomly lose preference points? I did not apply last year but I did retain my preference point from the year before.

    Prairie Chicken

I did not draw this year. I thought that I would. I now have a couple of preference points for next time. Have a great hunt.

Huns and quail in northern Iowa

Hungarian partridge seem to be one of the most difficult birds to pattern. I have only rarely seen them and never seen them twice in the same piece of habitat.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

My only pheasant hunting gripes to share are: 1. Autumn is too short and passes too quickly. 2. Good dogs do not live long enough.

    Shotshell Ammo Prices

Yes it is. For several years now, I have used only nontoxic shot for all bird hunting. I hunt most of the season with a 16 gauge SxS. I use 7/8 oz #4 in the right barrel and 7/8 oz #3 in the left barrel. This load chronographs at about 1500 fps. I have no trouble taking pheasants, in...

Huns and quail in northern Iowa

Late last season, we bumped a small flock (5) Hungarian partridge in NC Iowa. They were feeding in a harvested cornfield and flushed out of range. Hunting in NC and NW Iowa, I see probably 0.8 Hungarian partridge per season. I see about the same number in SE Minnesota. I have never shot one.
