    Lab guys sorry but....

I might be in the minority here but I will only tolerate my Griffon ranging 50 yards in any direction, no further. I do hunt all wild birds so perhaps that makes a difference. I invited a setter guy hunting quail and pheasants one time and that dog ruined what could have been a great three...

    Party Hunting

Thanks LittleBigHorn22. Believe it or not, every time we have the birds in a pile it makes me a little nervous. I also get nervous travelling down the road with an unknown number and species of birds and especially crossing state lines with different limits and different laws generally...

    Party Hunting

I hunt with 3 other folks for up to a week at a time. During a day we might hunt 3-4 different spots, three or more species of birds, out of 2 vehicles. Once the birds reach the truck they are put in a communal pile. At the end of every day that pile is cleaned and bagged in communal bags...

    Lab guys sorry but....

I have hunted behind several labs, a draathaur, a Griffon and I have even hunted behind a cocker spaniel when I was a kid and my grandpa hunted pheasants behind a rat terrier. Each dog was functional but in my opinion what made a great dog great were the number of bird contacts and retrieves it...

Why did you go with the breed that you did and have you been satisfied?

She is 7 or 8 years old now and is much more peppy than my last lab at the same age. I often hunt for three consecutive days (long days) and she hasn't slowed down at all. Additionally, she hunts equally well in sparse cover for chukar and quail and in thick cattail patches for quail and...

Why did you go with the breed that you did and have you been satisfied?

I have owned a Draat, several Labs and have enjoyed them all. However, my current dog is a Griffon. I selected the breed because my last Lab wore my ass out. So I googled "slow" "methodical" bird dog breeds and Griffon came up as fitting those traits. She is by far the best dog that I have...

I do like the surprise element for sure.

    How many shells?

Actually there are a couple of spots that you can expect to run into all three (chukar, quail and pheasants) during one hunt. A couple of times you get up a covey of birds that have a mix of species in it.

    How many shells?

Yes, there is a place that we killed chukar, quail and pheasant all in the same area. Most of the areas that have chukar also have quail but pheasants are a little closer to agriculture. We also have another spot where we have Huns, quail and pheasants all in the same spot.

    How many shells?

Thanks, Ditto for me. I shoot skeet and trap and do well. I shoot well when its a rooster but quail and chukar are so fast and as I get older and slower they seem to fly faster and even harder to catch up to, but man I love the challenge!!

    How many shells?

I apologize LittleBigHorn22, perhaps I'm a little sensitive about my poor shooting.

    How many shells?

Why would you be critical about the number of shells that I carry anyway Littlebighorn? Having more than I need is always better than not enough.

I’m not a guide. If you want to go hunting sometime I might be up for that. I hunt in Utah and eastern Oregon a good bit. There are a few chukar spots in North West Utah that are about as easy of a chukar hunt as I’ve ever been on.

    How many shells?

10 quail, 2 pheasants and 8 chukar would be the limit. Also that is a unicorn of a day. I have carried 50 shells and run out. I don’t like to be in the field and out of shells.

    How many shells?

I hunt quail, pheasant and chukar all at the same time, additionally I typically will hunt 1/2 a day (7miles), I shoot roughly 25% for all species and I see a lot of birds so I bring one box in my shell pockets and bring a spare in my game pouch. This post makes me sound like a pretty poor shot!!

I grew up hunting wild birds and hopefully die hunting wild birds. I'm not saying that pen raised birds don't have their place in the bird hunting world. In my opinion pen raised birds are a lot like a bluegill pond or a brook trout stream when I was a kid. It was low skill high return with...

    Tools?

I always have a leatherman, a dog water bowl, water and a little can of disinfectant and blood coagulant (Red Hot) on any day trip for over night trips, I have a pretty extensive dog medical bag that has pretty much everything that I might need such as extra shells, cleaning kit, dog and human...

Worst things that happened while hunting ?

The following story is a fishing story, not a hunting story but it is a doozy!! Additionally, it is absolutely 100% true. A friend and I were down at Lake Powell and our intent was to load a boat with camping gear for 4 days and head up Lake about 30 miles and camp out and fish. We loaded up...
