This was a good tip, and one I hadn't ever heard before

We were out in South Dakota and hunting a private farm. This is a rare luxury for me. We still needed a few birds to fill out. The old farmer told us of a public spot nearby, where a spring comes out of a hillside. He said, "that's where the birds go everyday to get their drink." On the one hand...

    The truth about Prairie Storm

Back in the day 1220fps seemed like the most common speed of 12ga. lead game loads. That being said they've been shooting 1330fps for over 100 years. I think it's a case of "the goal posts have changed." With SOME of the newer shells pushing speed as a marketing gimmick, 1330 doesn't seem very...

    where’s Bob

Yes in South Dakota, too busy killing roosters to make any fairytale posts. Public is good, private is good. Ditches are good. All wild birds, never paid to hunt. Bought one old timer a nice gift for helping us out. I won't add any long-winded lyrical prose. I'll simply say I love pheasant...

Help me plan a trip to NoDak

The golden era of unposted land in ND was over years ago. The word was out and duck hunters from all over hell's half acre flocked to the state. More land is posted every year. This would be my take if going there. Scout online for public land, and plan on hunting a lions share of it. While in...

New hack: Will birds flock to me?

Many times in the early days and many times since, I feel like Custer in southern Montana with Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse just over the rise. My blunders, fails, and foul-ups are legion. Long ago I'd have capitulated, if not for one thing. On that rare day where I rise above the Neanderthal...

New hack: Will birds flock to me?

None taken. I've now been accused of being goose(few months back) and Limitless! I'm not goose because I don't shoot a 28, I never been to the high Canadian, never hunted with my cousin, and wouldn't be caught dead ever owning a ski boat. I'm not limitless because I've learned to shorten my...

    24-25 Season Recap

I think the part you missed is cyclone mentioned "leases." These are very bad for trying to door knock, even after season. Here's what happens. A guy pays big bucks to lease 110 acres of private land. The owner agrees. Every year the lease is in place he will tell anyone that wants to bird...

    24-25 Season Recap

A majority of private land seems to now be owned by absentees, trusts, corporations etc. Not easy to find the right door to knock on.

    F150

I've always had good luck with them. I got a 2017 5.0L with 145k miles. Ignition coils go, but those are easy. All I've done to it so far is plugs and just a few weeks ago the water pump was squealing so had a new one put in.

    Getting Old Sucks

Look on the bright side, with age you cut back on the grab ass, this should lead to better hunting and enjoyment of time afield.

    Game warden question

I didn't comment again because I only had a quick phone call with my buddy. Once I see him in person if there's more info I'll post.

    Flinty Hills

I thought the burning was good? I suppose every year is not. I think a burn every 3 years is a better deal. I just saw a few old videos on the flint hills and they interviewed some ranchers who spoke highly of their stewardship of the land. In the videos it didn't really look like the grass...

    Flinty Hills

I've read several times now that the flint hills are the largest remaining piece of tall grass prairie left. I'd like to get down to see it someday for that reason alone.

It seems like those game production areas are money about 90% of the time. WPA's, they can be hit and miss.

    2024/2025 Pheasant Hunting Videos

here's a youtube I saw tonight. The guy seems like he really loves hunting and loves his dogs. At the end he hunts a ditch. Some might look down on that, but I thought it was great. Pheasant hunting is such a great way of life, and I love being able to see how other hunters approach it with...

    Golden Retrievers allowable hunting temps

I've noticed over the years, it's never too cold for the goldens I'm lucky enough to follow. It can be 10 degrees out, I find a spring creek flowing and the dog will lay in it to cool off. And once me and the dog fell through the ice in a slough, it was around 30 degrees out. I figured she would...
