    2022 Road side counts

Up 18% (from last year when it was down 22%, and it showed) is less than thrilling.

    Reconditioning Filson chaps?

Warm the wax in a water bath. Paint or rub it on and then put the chaps in 2 pillow cases opening opposite directions (so the chaps don't fall out) or a drawstring bag and run them on high in your dryer for about a half hour.

    Dove Tomorrow

Not quite Kansas, but shot 9 in the afternoon in the Missouri river bottoms in NW MO. I had the same experience with mojos not having much effect on them this year, certainly not compared to years past. I only use spinners for dove and teal anymore, and I wonder if their effectiveness on those 2...

    You're all full of it.....

As a ranter, yellow lab lover, and 870 fan, I enjoyed that rant, the pictures of that fine-looking yellow lab, and the properly worn 870... (also liked the Boykin/Chessie combo)

Upland bird population will never fully rebound.

I don't think so, but I could be surprised. I don't know how many birds were killed in MN last year, but it's generally nowhere near Kansas, even in down years. The areas I hunt in MN were noticeably down last year, but there are certainly fewer hunters and the limit is 3 not 4. Still, usually...

Upland bird population will never fully rebound.

Well, it’s been in decline for about a decade, so that tracks.

    Is South Dakota just hype?

Yes. The have to put a plastic blinder thru the birds’ nostrils to keep them from pecking each other to death when raised in high concentration captivity and you can see their stretched out nostrils.

Upland bird population will never fully rebound.

I turned off my auto renew this summer and decided I’d kind of take a “we’ll see” approach to next year. I bought some land in Kansas I plan to retire to for the winters in a few years, or sooner if my job’s residency requirement is lifted, but in the meanwhile there’s less and less draw for me...

    Wheat Harvest

The undeniable fact that pheasant populations never recovered from the drought a decade ago (though quail sure did), certainly makes me pessimistic. Every year it was some totally uncontrollable reason for declines: too hot, to wet, to dry, hail, timing of rains, ice, whatever. Iowa's recovery...

    To many hunters

Yeah, the problem is not too many hunters, is that those hunters are funneled onto less and less accessible land with carrying capacity. In Kansas, so little private ground gets hunted at all, that pheasants get pushed off public land quickly onto nearby private land and never have any reason to...

    To many hunters

Kansas has a lot fewer upland hunters than it did 25 years ago. Upland hunter numbers are about 2/3rds of what they were in the 00s, half of their historic highs in the 80s.

    KDWP app heads up

It is a nice app, though. I've definitely used worse ones (or none, which sucks).

    It Looks Grim

You don't say...so, Iowa has access obstacles even though the deer hunters there aren't mostly from out of state. Who'd a thunk it?

    It Looks Grim

Maybe, but there's no deer leases in Iowa and no purple paint or keep out signs. It's like the open range up there.

    It Looks Grim

You see what you want to see to confirm your OOSer boogeyman is real. Iowa: 264K deer tags sold in a state of 56,000 sq. miles with 300,000 acres of public hunting land and 29,000 acres of walk-in hunting 445,000 deer vs. Kansas: 183K deer tags sold in a state of 82,000 sq miles with 300,000...

    It Looks Grim

Iowa still has more deer hunters than Kansas, somewhere around was twice as many, in about 2/3rds as much land, with approximately the same amount of public land. I don't know how a person could imagine that there's not deer leases and posted no trespassing signs and purple paint in Iowa. I hunt...

    Is South Dakota just hype?

I think SD allows party hunting, where your limit is 3birds/person in the group, no matter who shoots them.

    It Looks Grim

Hey look, I'm sure you have legitimate grievances, but no one is putting words in your mouth. You've probably posted 15 times on this board about how they sold the first nonresident license in 1995 and then everything went wrong. It's just nonsense. They have nonresident deer hunting in South...
