    More pheasants than ever before!!

I've done it in western Kansas. Those days may be over, but it used to be pretty common. I mostly hunt alone or with a small group, but I'm not immune to the joys of a big, social pheasant line though a couple quarter sections of milo or wheat.

    New gun

Is that the standard engraving on a feather?

Fugly shotguns is it just me ?

I’ve gotten exceptionally lucky with new Browning wood, buying blind and have gotten really good sticks. The worst one I have is a vintage 90s superlight. But yes, normally they are lackluster at best.

    Boss shotshells?

    5s or 6s.

    Boss shotshells?

I quit hunting lead several years ago and switched primarily to Boss. It works great. Did a little mentally masturbatory switching between sizes, and settled on 6s or 5s at pheasants (16 ga).

    All My Shotguns

I am green with envy. The longest tenured gun in my stable I bought in 2018.

    Pheasant and/or ducks?

I have had labs for a while, after switching from spaniels. Hunted the oldest one almost exclusively on pheasants, maybe 1 or 2 duck hunts a year. But, mostly because I had a lab and live in a place with better duck than pheasant hunting, I started duck hunting more and more. These last couple...

In the case of my Parker it's pretty obvious someone loved it enough to put an exceptional, but very heavy, piece of wood on an already piggish Trojan they loved.

If leaving spent shells in the prairie didn't bother me, a 24" barrel on a subgauge American pump would still be my first choice for upland hunting. Obviously that's a little different than break action barrel length preferences, but I think my 16 ga Citori Superlight is 26" and it doesn't miss...

    Reports

Hunter numbers for KS were down about 10K for bobwhite and 12K for pheasant, so word got out. 320,000 quail and 258,000 pheasants harvested. Probably still above Minnesota, but not by much...

    Best hunting pup for pheasants

As did I. They are as much fun as I remembered,

    Best hunting pup for pheasants

No matter what you hunt or where, a Labrador is never the wrong decision.

    Your favorite pheasant O/U

That new engraving pattern on the white lightnings is a huge improvement.

    Your favorite pheasant O/U

I've been kind of wary of the 725, because I bought a Beretta and couldn't hit anything with it, switched back to a 20 ga white lightning and was back to my usual mediocre shooting, and my understanding, at least, is that the 725 handles more like a Silver Pigeon, but I may be way off base about...

    Reports

Oh, damn! I just realized today is the 29th (aka, Kansas Day), not yesterday. Coulda tickled that rooster after all! I'm gonna have to sneak across state line and at least put my feet down on Kansas (even if it is JoCo) dirt today.

    Reports

Made a quick jaunt to private land Northeast KS, flushed 3 good-sized (15+ bird) coveys and a rooster (I don’t shoot non-Kansas native birds on Kansas Day) in about 3 hours of meandering with all 3 dogs down, including my oldest, who is 10.5 and semi-retired. There were multiple hunters on every...

    Rate your past season

Worst upland season I've had in decades. The only saving grace was that I didn't try very hard, didn't hunt very often, slept in alot, and shot lights out. I hunted southwestern Minnesota, central South Dakota, southwestern Iowa, and northwest, northcentral and northeast Kansas, and in every one...

    Snow hunting

I hunted northeast for quail and north central for pheasants yesterday. Didn't put up any quail, all private, headed west at noon and put up 35-40 birds on public. I don't usually hunt public, but I thought the snow would bunch them up and hold them tight, but they were running and flushing...

    Your favorite pheasant O/U

I bought one Beretta 686 and could not hit a thing with it at the sporting clays course. I had never really bought the "either you shoot Brownings well, or you shoot Berettas well, but not both" saw, but it proved true enough in my limited experience that I sold it and bought another...
