What to look for in cable cutters to release dogs from snares?

A Leatherman will not cut the braided wire/cable used for most snares. You definitely need a cable cutter. This is the one I purchased from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M6WREP5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It is inexpensive and it works - I've tried it...

    Hunters Going on Point

This is why I hunt flushing dogs. I can't stand the stress of knowing a bird is likely right in front of that dog. I recently had a similar event happen with one of my labs. I saw the bird (pheasant), as it ducked into the grass. My dog was upwind so she didn't scent it until she came around...

    First time with shock collar

A lot of good dogs have been ruined by inappropriate use of e-collars, even if the dog was collar conditioned in advance. You may get lucky and get away with stopping a dog chasing something (deer, rabbit, whatever) using an e-collar, but the chances are pretty high that you will cause...

    What are you doing here??

NM used to have a very short season in a very limited area. I believe it was limited to residents only by drawing. I can find no reference to pheasants in the 2021-22 hunting regs though, so maybe huntable populations no longer exist. As far as finding pheasants in the area you were hunting, we...

Marshall Fire- lost 30 years of hunting and fishing gear

Ballistic Products periodically has Cheddite primers. Have to keep checking their website and when they are "available", put in your order. US primers are likely not going to be available for the reloading public this year at all. Vista Products (CCI, Remington, Federal) just put out a news...

    Tick medicine

There were some reported issues with Seresto collars causing illness and death in dogs. We quit using them for that reason and because they are not rated as effective against fleas. There used to be a similar collar that had both flea and tick prevention in its composition. Can't remember the...

    Is Rawhide safe for dogs

Stick with large marrow bones that your dog can't chew up and swallow. Most of the rawhide products sold as pet treats are made in foreign counties (read China). Many have been documented as having unhealthy chemicals and other contaminants. The marrow bones also have the advantage of helping...

    First Kansas hunt

I tend to stay away from the very large CRP fields if they are a flat monoculture CRP planting, but most CRP has some terrain and habitat structure if you look closely. I hunt those areas. If large is all that is available, I will walk out into the field a ways then hunt to a corner. That can be...

    First Kansas hunt

I believe there are more birds than folks think. If it ever snows, go out and look. You'll be amazed. When it is as dry as it is, you can't move without making noise, dogs have a difficult time holding a scent and the birds just move off ahead of you. I have found many times that large...

    Bioammo

Advertised to have a biodegradable case, base wad and wad. Offered with lead or steel shot. Made in Spain. I couldn't find any reviews on it, yet.

    Tick medicine

Whatever you use, be aware that the warm weather in parts of pheasant country has ticks out now. We were in NW Kansas for 3 weeks in November/December and found ticks on the dogs and ourselves almost every day. Not a pleasant thing to find, but be aware and act accordingly. A local WalMart had...

    Poor Shooting

When hunting is hard and you walk for hours without seeing a bird, the shock of the flush and the desire to make a good shot often lead to a miss. Not sure what you do about it. When hunting is good, I, at least, start making good shots.

    Scary Moment

Cable cutters (your Leatherman/multi-tool won't cut cable) and a rope (1/4" or so in diameter) to release conibear traps should be in every bird hunter's vest. I've found old sets from previous years even. Best to be prepared!

Trying to get my nephew a bird

I've seen a lot of good shotgun shooters (on clays) totally fall apart when a pheasant flushes. It is helpful when shooting clays (I prefer skeet or sporting clays) to shoot low gun, using the gun you will be hunting with. The other thing that helps me is to shoot random delay (International)...

Loan your dogs to a buddy?

Not on your life. If someone wants to borrow my dog, they can, if I am invited as well, and then only if I approve of the hunting situation. Too much invested, both in time, money and emotion to let my hunting partners out with someone else.

    The Leg Drop

I believe leg drops are an indication of the bird being hit "somewhere". It drops a leg because it is hurt, but not necessarily hit in that leg. If you are lucky, it will be a leg hit serious enough to prevent the bird from running. All birds that indicate a "hit", such as dropping a leg, should...

Late Season Roosters (Loads & Chokes)

IC/Mod works all season. I use #4 lead, #3 steel (when non-tox is required). Either one will break bones if you hit the bird. That said, i just spent two weeks in Kansas using #5 Fiocchi Golden Pheasant (20ga , 3", 1 1/4 oz). If you center a bird with that load, even out there quite a ways...

gearing up for 10 day solo road trip

If you are looking for evening entertainment, you aren't hunting hard enough! The paracord for conibear trap release and small cable cutters are items most don't have but the danger is very real. South Dakota allows "kill" traps.

    Who let “this” dog out!!!

I hunt with spayed female yellow labs. Zero aggression. They are there to hunt. Like others, the few times I have hunted with other hunters/dogs the problems came with intact male dogs. That is up to the owners but now I just leave if I come across that situation. Not worth the stress and vet bills.

    Heading to Kansas

I live in the mountains of Colorado. This suggestion works everywhere road conditions are bad. It will save you a lot of heart ache.
