    Best Dogs

In my opinion, Retriever Hunt Tests and actual upland hunting for wild pheasants are two different things. Some dogs do both well, and many do one or the other well. A highly titled dog (including some 4xGMPR’s / Triple Crown dogs, MH / MNH dogs and HRCH / Grand dogs) doesn’t necessarily...

    Hello from Colorado

I believe Julie has retired and moved from orchard. She does do a regular PL podcast on Podbean that’s free. And I believe that her book about training pointing labs is still available. Also there’s a Rocky Mountain pointing lab club and I believe that she works with them from time to time.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

A couple seasons ago, on opening day, I was out with my lab on a good familiar 1/4 section of CRP. Over the rise come 4-5 guys and some dogs headed right at me on a line. Not sure why the didn’t see me. Turns out they parked a short distance from me too. Initially upset, I decided to leave...

How to get better at wingshooting

Try putting a small flashlight in the end of the barrel in an unloaded gun. Pick a target on the far wall or ceiling, pull up and see what you are aiming at. You can follow the joint lines between the wall and the ceiling to practice swinging left to right and right to left. I’ve found this...

    Hunting 2 dogs

I prefer to follow 1 dog in the field. I’ve hunted with 2 at one time and have had situations where they’ll go in different directions or, alternatively, one won’t hunt with as much enthusiasm as the other, knowingly watching for the other to find a bird. It can also become competitive. I do...

    Single shot guns?

I like the idea. Maybe I’d become a better shot knowing that I’ve got 1 shot? IDK. I watched a video earlier this year of a hunter unloading 5 shots at a bird.

Our Final Hunt of the Season

One other suggestion would be to put a small mag light in the end of the barrel (May have to take the choke out to allow it to fit) to find out where the gun is actually pointing while practicing gun mount. Works great in a semi dark room! I practice mounting the gun, flipping the safety off...

I gave NE Colorado a try last Sunday. Lots and lots of snow. One minute I’m walking on top of 3’-4’ drifts and then I’m waist deep for no apparent rhyme or reason! Made for an interesting walk! We did see a few, but the birds within shooting range were hens! Always fun to get out!

Interesting day and a first for me.

I’ve helped with many PF youth days and women’s days and really enjoy it. Always in the pheasant field. I agree with most of what’s been written. The kids usually don’t even get a shell til the dog is on point and the handler has it under control. Safety’s been emphasized to each group...

Happy New Year! I hunt Colorado regularly/weekly with my labs…generally 1 dog at a time. Mostly WIHA. Lots of that habitat that I’ve seen has been grazed or mowed. Most days I’ll walk 10 - 12 miles. Recently, I harvested a rooster on New Year’s Eve and had 1 hen flush wild New Year’s Day...

    Shot a whopper pheasant

Yes! Have him mounted! Nice bird, great story and lifelong memory!

    Beginner

Some basic obedience is needed. Here, heal and sit. In my opinion, it’s nice when you can use the “here” command without yelling at the dog. I’d invest in a GPS (with a tone option) training collar as you likely have a dog that likes to hunt way out in front of you. As mentioned above, It...

    Obedience Training

I’d work on here, heal and sit til the pup goes off for training, usually around 6 months ( I believe when the adult teeth come in ). Is there a local AKC or HRC club? That could be beneficial. Julie Bates (Knutson) author of Training the Pointing Lab, talks about a daily walk with a young...

What's the Consensus of Pheasant Hunters

I’d go with whichever you feel more confident with, and bring the other as a backup. 5 shot should be fine. I’d practice mounting the unloaded gun inside with a mini mag light in the barrel, in a semi dark room. This will give you a good idea of where your gun is pointed. Muscle memory is key...

    I can't feel my fingers!

I will wear deer skin gloves along with a hunting muff that waterfowl hunters use, until my hands warm up. The muff has shell loops and I’ll alternate putting a gloved hand in the muff. Works well for me. Mine is a Browning from Sierra Trading Post.

    Dog names and tributes

Country western songs/artists have become my go to. First male black lab was the Man in Black, Cash. Current black lab female is Ready to Run, Dixie (Dixie Chicks) and (female yellow lab) Right on the Money, AJ (Alan Jackson). And I’m hoping for a puppy in the Spring out of AJ that will tie...

Experiences going from one bird dog to two?

I had two out several years ago. The older one got birdie and went left. The younger one got birdie and went right. I followed the older one and the younger one flushed the bird! Plus, there’s only 1 to keep track of if there’s only 1 out. I do mainly hunt by myself as well. If there’s...
