    Future of CRP ?

Here are some photos showing how I get tree and shrubs planted and going at the Ponderosa on a CRP contract. Plan to do some more in the next two years and hopefully there will be programs to help with cost share.

    Future of CRP ?

The most assistance I have ever gotten was back in the 80's from the Dodge City Chapter of Quail Unlimited. I don't know if the corruption at QU's headquarters was as bad as it was at the end, but the local chapter sure helped me and other farmers especially with cover crop seed. There was a lot...

    Milo/sorghum

I don't know your location. I posted on the "Millet" thread about a food plot mix I used this year. I like the mix of milo, plus the taller canes and millets in that mix. I would check with the extension office in your area for the planting rates. If it is planted too thick and the moisture...

    Pheasant Fest 2025 KC

I hear you. For the last 45 years I have bought bacon wrapped filets from Kirby Meat in Dodge for Christmas Eve. It is my grandkids favorite meal. Spent a couple years in SE Kansas(Frontenac with the mafia) and enjoyed the chicken in that area, especially Chicken Anne's.

    Pheasant Fest 2025 KC

Someone had mentioned Jess & Jim's to me. Looked at their menu and it looks more my style. Don't get me wrong, I will eat one of those $100 steaks if someone else is buying, but I don't really get it spending that kind of money. Next time I am in KC and someone wants to buy me a steak I will...

    Pheasant Fest 2025 KC

I hope the natives will chime in on that. I have yet to have a steak in KC better than the ones I cook for our Christmas Eve dinner, but I am sure I haven't found the place yet, but would like to know.

    Pheasant Fest 2025 KC

I enjoy bbq when I am in KC. I haven't been to Slap's, Danny Edwards or Meat Mitch, I will have to try them and haven't heard of Scott's Kitchen, so will add it to my list. At Joe's I get the Z Man Sandwich and share an order of fries. Burnt Ends, when available, are awesome. At Q39 I get the...

    Worth the trip?

Still snow on the ground here at the Ponderosa, but next three days will have high temps around 50 will take care of that. Hopefully, three days will help dry out the ground, especially where the drifts have been.

    Cimarron this weekend?

Pure slop around the Ponderosa. Still snow cover, but daily highs above freezing, making it a real mess.

Company that does snake avoidance training?

I tried about 15 years ago to do one in Dodge as a fund raiser for PF. I couldn't get it using the people I contacted because they used diamond backs and they cannot be brought into Kansas. I don't know if this has changed and I don't know about Missouri. I ended up taking my dog to Amarillo.

    Future of CRP ?

Of the farmers, landowners, employees of NRCS and FSA there are some, although not many in my association, that are truly beneficial to our wildlife. Most of my design assistance has come from Kansas Wildlife and Parks. As I plan additional acres devoted to CRP in the next few years, my first...

    First Time Kansas Trip Report

We stop about 30 yards from the end of the field and wait for a minute or so. This has resulted in many flushes of nervous pheasants. Before we started doing that many times the birds would sit tight near the end of the field only to flush behind us as we exited.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

The other day a dead rooster ended up in the farmstead from I am sure hit the power line. I picked up a beautiful lesser prairie chicken years ago that had clipped a barbed wire fence on the edge of a draw. That happens often enough that putting markers on the fence helps limit those collisions...

    First Time Kansas Trip Report

Thanks for the story. Glad you came to Kansas and enjoyed the hunt. Fred is a good looking dog and sounds to be just as good in the field. Come back again.

Welcome to the forum. Here in Kansas our pheasant and quail seasons run through January 31st. There can be some really nice late season hunts and especially after a snow event.
