    Montana Ducks

Having fun taking photos of migrating ducks here in Montana. I've been using a relatively inexpensive used bridge camera (Nikon P900) on my daily morning hikes at a local refuge. Lots of diversity in Montana...mallards, pintails, widgeon, gadwall, 3 teal species, wood duck, shoveler, diver...

    Many of us are pigs.

I hike a National Wildlife Refuge every weekday morning at sunrise. It is an 8-mile hike and on the way back I pick up litter to keep the refuge clean and to stretch out this 67-year old body. This past week I had a drake canvasback curious about my white trash bag. Pre-dawn so not enough light...

    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

Yes NW Montana has Eastern subspecies unlike most of the west which has Meriam's or RioGrande. I think they were originally transplanted here.

    Pointer vs Flusher Poll

I started with English Setters and Vislas. I got beat many times solo hunting with a point in the middle of a huge cattail patch. And I would get beat by late season wild running roosters. And I would not shoot unless it was off a point, thus many wild sharptail and hun flushes were let go. So I...

Gear That Lasted At Least A Decade?

I bought a used Bridge camera that is over ten years old. Bought it for $200. I take it everywhere. Some photos:

    Water in the field...

I recycle soda pop bottles ranging in size from 8 oz to 2 liters depending on the hunt. Pop bottles are lightweight and essentially free. I also like them that I can easily drink water to rehydrate on the drive home.

    HOE-LEE-COW!

I hike every other morning to keep in shape. It's ten miles which takes me 3 hours so I start early predawn. Roosters crowing peaks in the dark about an hour before sunrise.

    Remember Poly Chokes?

My first shotgun in 1979 was a Mossberg pump with polychoke. I never patterned it and read that for waterfowl and steel shot, modified is best. One day I had three teal coming directly towards me spaced a total of 6 feet apart. Fired one shot and all three teal fell. A "scotch triple" due to...

    protection while hunting

I have not had any problem with them shooting 100 target sporting clays for 2 years. I did have a problem with a custom molded pair from my audiologist... my ears would have ringing for a couple days after shooting 7/8 oz loads in skeet. Turned out to be ear wax acting as a tuning...

    Chewing On Training Birds

I start teaching hold with my hand in the dogs mouth. The trick is to teach the dog that as soon as he stops movement it triggers the release of the hand from the mouth. I will typically do this about 15 training sessions (twice a day for a week). Most new trainers are either too slow...say...

    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

My guess is the gobbler was attacked by a coyote or mountain lion that got some of those tailfeathers? We did have a mountain lion kill a deer in our pasture the month I took those gobbler photos.
