3 objectives when taking a photo

When taking dog photos with my cell phone, I aim for 3 easy objectives: Place the phone slightly below the dog Capture the landscape we are hunting in Capture the "catch light" in the dogs eyes This photo was from our hun hunt this morning.

    Importance of eCollars?

There are at least 2 aspects: 1) Training to avoid hazards. Typically an ecollar is used with a defanged rattlesnake to "snake-proof" bird dogs. The same principle can be applied to training dogs to avoid porcupines, skunks, do not chase deer, etc. The ecollar correction comes WITHOUT a...

    New guy from NW MT

I also hunt with labs early season (Montana resident). Typically I hunt from home, starting at dawn each weekday when it is cool (50s). I start with 2 hour hunts the first few weeks, alternating labs each day to toughen up their feet and hill climbing muscles. Hunting at dawn minimizes the...

    Purpose of Force-Fetch?

A bit of history: Just as the blind retrieve concept was borrowed from herding dog trainers (Dave Elliot), retriever trainers borrowed force-breaking from pointing dog trainers. Back in the 1880s, pointing dog trainer David Sanborn developed force-breaking to teach elementary retrieving to...

    Getting ready

I have a 2010 crew cab pickup with 100k miles. I pulled out the back seat to make more room as I hunt solo 99% of the time. That way I can put a dog box inside if it is hot on a Sept hun hunt or cold after hunting waterfowl in January. I also recharged the AC system. Dogs and human are in good...

Wild bird hunting might be cheaper than I thought

Frozen ducks for retriever training in Alaska cost us over $35 per frozen mallard when we can ship them.

Wild bird hunting might be cheaper than I thought

Also the exercise of upland hunting has major health benefits. I think I would be 30 pounds heavier and likely die a decade earlier if I sat around instead of year-round hiking in preparation for upland season.

    Importance of eCollars?

There are 2 primary applications: 1) Teaching avoidance such as snake-proofing, dechasing deer, teaching pup to avoid porcupines, etc. 2) Quick obedience such as teaching pup to sit on a whistle with a nose full of fresh bird scent instead of tracking and eventually flushing a running rooster...

    Truck caps

I have a 2010 Silverado with LEER topper. Road dust is tough to minimize. One product that helped with my bed was Rok Block with prevents road dust coming thru that gap between the tailgate and bed.

Gear That Lasted At Least A Decade?

Jet Sleds. I have one I used for over 20 years hauling firewood at -40 degrees in Alaska. Jet Sleds are so versatile: 1) Under the outboard motor to catch any bolt that falls while changing a water pump 2) Hauling moose quarters 3) Hauling fire wood 4) Hold water in our pasture for game camera...

Workout / train (humans, not dogs) for upcoming season

Now at age 67, retired for 5 years, I start in March as soon as the snow/ice is melting. Before that it is cross country skiing every other day. In March, the north-facing trails are ice, so I carry cleats with me and trekking poles. Usually 4 miles every other morning, reverse lunges and...

    Huns

I've hunted huns or gray partridge in Utah, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. Here in Montana, I typically hunt them early season (starting 1-Sept) the first hour or 2 when it is cool or late season in December if my rooster spots have noisy crusted snow. I can usually find snow-free hills that...

    High protein and organ failure?

I've not seen any scientific studies about anything negative feeding a high fat and high protein kibble for working dogs. I train retrievers for field trials 6 days a week and hunt them from Sept. to mid January. I've always feed the highest fat (>=25%) highest protein (>=30%) kibble on the...

    food

I train retrievers 5 days a week in the summer with lots of long swims. So I feed the same kibble as during hunting season, 20% fat, 32% protein, first ingredient is menhaden which is high in omega-3s.

Pigeons for training, no kill release

When I lived in New Hampshire I would catch them at night at roosting sites. Use 2 radiator clamps to attach a landing net to a telescoping pole I bought for painting at Home Depot. Shine headlamp up to locate roosting pigeons under a bridge. Turn the light off, raise the landing net, turn the...

I gotta apologize for some of my posts.

Another reason I love labs. A couple of bumpers and any pond and we are training! I also enjoy skeet, trap, sporting clays, 5-stand. I also find wildlife photography a fun hobby until the hun season starts on Sept 1. From yesterday morning here in Montana.

    Dark Meat Recipes

Tough is typically due to overcooking or a very old bird. The best waterfowl I've ever eaten was a grilled speckle-belly goose. I like Canada geese from here in Montana. I simply grill the breast rare over hardwood coals after brushing with olive oil. Let rest for 15 minutes and then slice...
