How many of you let birds go?

I’ve seen the birds that fly a hundred yards or more and then sky straight up, and then fall stone dead. I’ve gone out and picked them up and then driven out to the group of hunters that shot it without knowing it was hit. I try to watch “missed” birds for awhile, many fall to the ground or do...

How many of you let birds go?

I know of that happening…haven’t had it happen personally, but I did with sharpies about 5 years ago…never saw the 2nd bird til it was falling! It was slightly lower in elevation but flying in an identical formation with the one I shot at…I was above them, they were crossing shots…

    Lots of hunters

Good point, much higher. I read an article the other day that corn acreage is likely gonna lose $125-200/acre this year, even with high yields, likely 175-200 in SD…that’s a tough pill…1000 acres =a loss of $125,000-$200,000…my main farmer friend farms 2x that much corn…an ag banker stopped in...

    What’s the best food?

    Which one? 26/16? 30/25? 32/32? Etc? I’m using 26/16, will mix some 30/25 once the season starts…

How many of you let birds go?

Who cares if others are or aren’t persuaded by your logic? It does makes sense, for sure. Just bs’ng here waiting for season to start. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do well. Now, if we can get the newbies using proper chokes and loads, that’ll be a bonus! I don’t mean newbies here, but the...

How many of you let birds go?

I walk twice a day typically, with my 2 older dogs…the 10 year old limits me a bit. I also walk my pup off leash in a field that resembles sharpy cover…not long walks, but a big loop, maybe 10 minutes. I get about 4 miles in per day on my walks. I’ve shot 3x in the past 3 weeks…I hate bugs...

How many of you let birds go?

I’m flatulent a lot out in the field…they hear me, but don’t smell me…I smell me, not good! Like certain cattail sloughs I wade through…no wonder I’m solo out there…😇

How many of you let birds go?

Crunchy snow is the worst…I like hunting in a modest wind, even a bit more than modest…totally still conditions aren’t for me, not that I can control that…

How many of you let birds go?

I hunt public a fair amount, usually solo. Group hunts typically on private ground. Never really struggle getting birds despite yelling at dogs, shooting a fair amount, etc. Fun being out there, feel fortunate I’m without aches and pains, and my biggest challenges are getting over barbed...

How many of you let birds go?

I’m not usually in charge of the group hunts I am involved in..I have 3 dogs, several farmer friends of mine that often have groups will ask me to join them…I don’t overstep and run their hunts…not a big deal one way or another…there’s lots of birds, being quiet vs blaring a boombox doesn’t...

How many of you let birds go?

I’m surprised more hens aren’t shot when someone yells rooster! and there are multiple birds flushing at the same time, especially by less experienced hunters..ther are times when a lot of craziness is happening at the same time!

How many of you let birds go?

Minimizing hen mortality while afield matters a lot to me; I get nervous when there’s snow on the ground, especially 4-6” or more, as birds hold pretty tight and dogs will grab them…especially in heavy cover…I usually have some time to stop this, not always. I’d like to say those hens always...

How many of you let birds go?

I chatted with a good friend who is as knowledgeable as any biologist, he said wing feathers are a telltale sign down to 6 weeks. He shows us interesting stuff on ducks, geese, cranes, sharpies, pheasants, prairie chickens, huns, ruffed grouse, you name it…this guy is a very successful wildlife...

How many of you let birds go?

This group thinks about pheasant hunting year round; the opening weekend warriors who rarely hunt are the ones who need to brush up on this stuff…I’ve seen a lot of bad decisions over the years…usually the novices who rarely hunt…
