NW ND prairie bird count dropped significantly

I haven’t been on UJ for 20 months, I assume Greg Hartman and others are still posting photo essays almost daily of their results? Always interesting…👍

NW ND prairie bird count dropped significantly

Just saw the video that GFP put out as of 9/4…grouse down about 50% statewide from last year, huns in the NW down about 70%. Starting with pretty strong levels from a year ago, probably won’t feel too different from some of the years I’ve experienced in the 16 or 17 years I’ve been heading to...

NW ND prairie bird count dropped significantly

I personally haven’t seen the report, but one of my close friends is tight with the head nd GFP biologist…he said NW ND huns down 75%, grouse down 50%…

    Harvest already starting

In the past few years there have been terrible winds in September/October (derecho levels) that knocked huge amounts of corn to the ground…75 mph, +/-…really does some damage, and it’s very difficult harvesting it when it’s knocked down, and I think that’s tough on equipment, too…always...

    Harvest already starting

Knowing weather is always a risk—wind, hail, snow, etc—there’s always an urgency to harvest amongst my farmer friends…at least get it in bins or store it at the elevator for a modest fee per bushel per month…my guys aren’t getting much more than $3.30-3.40 for corn, at least the last time I asked.

    Harvest already starting

Just watched us farm report this am…mainly to see Tyne Morgan ❤️. China’s not buying our soybeans like they used to, which hurts for sure. With cattle herds decreasing, I suppose the demand for corn is down from that source. Most of my farmer friends sell their corn to an ethanol plant, and...

    Lots of hunters

Goose, seriously, start a podcast or some YouTube show…it’d be a hit! Do some wild game cooking, dog training, hunting, traveling around Montana pontificating and such….I mean it! Have guests riding around with you, swilling PBR…chatting with your peeps in local establishments, churches...

    Training My Lab Puppy

You’ve shot around her? She’s retrieving dummies with wings? My definition of “hunting” could be someone else’s training session…semantics, really. You’d have to tie me up or tranquilize me or both to keep me from taking a 5 or 6 month old pup that’s been conditioned to gunshot and has already...

    Training My Lab Puppy

I’m no expert, but the old gal sitting next to me right now in my van was born 5/22, she was with me sharpie hunting in mid-Sept back in 2015…she enjoyed being afield with me and my other dogs and I. She was also with in October pheasant hunting, and was productive as fall progressed. If she’s...

How many of you let birds go?

When there are multiple birds flushing, it’s tempting to quit watching the bird you just “missed” and find a new target!!!! Funny how many were hit but don’t fall for 5 seconds or longer…

    Training My Lab Puppy

Nice! Find shorter grass…the height of the rough on a golf course…keep it easy…as she grows, walk in slightly taller grass…enjoy! Sounds like you are…👍

    Training My Lab Puppy

She’s doing great! Congrats! I have a 7 month old female lab, along with my 2 older female labs. My goal during their “puppy season” is to have fun…and to create a dog that’s excited by birds. I might hunt her with a 10’ check cord for control if needed, but maybe it’s not necessary in her...
