NW ND prairie bird count dropped significantly

Drove 80 miles into heart of oil country to avoid rain…saw 9 and got 1 in first field, drove 5 miles and hunted school land that usually produces…running streams in the pasture! Saw 20 or so, like the first field it was long distance birdwatching, managed to get 2. AYA 4/53 20 gauge is a wand...

NW ND prairie bird count dropped significantly

My buddy contacted 40-50 on school land, I was 4 miles away and saw about 10. We picked new state ground and got our last grouse, saw maybe a dozen birds? 50 minute walk. My buddy got 3 Huns as well on this walk. I’d say grouse #’s are ok to good, depending…fun as heck as always!

NW ND prairie bird count dropped significantly

Afternoon walk was productive, 2 decent coveys of young birds, about 25-30? total, and moved about 10 singles…about a 2.5 mile walk, maybe 3? Contacted a covey of Huns, 12-15? Good outing for my 7.5 month old pup along with 6 year old. Left the 10 year old at camp.

NW ND prairie bird count dropped significantly

Heavy rain where we’re based, drove about 80 minutes to get out of the rain…hunted an area we’ve hunted before, but years ago…2 of us were about 5 miles from each other, contacted about 45 sharpies between us. Saw about 25 Huns between us. Bagged 4 grouse between us. Most birds I contacted...

    Nebraska sharptails.

I’ll be on the prairie for 2 weeks, heading out in the am…bringing a few 28 gauges and a few 20 gauges. Matt D tipped me off a year or 2 ago to some nice B & P 28 gauge loads…15/16 oz of #6 lead…1250 fps…$15/box? I suspect I’ll shoot a few boxes of those, maybe not. I’ll shoot 20 gauge lead...

    Lots of hunters

Ok! Sounds good to me! Literally, “go pro”…we’ll film it…what do deer hunters say? “If it’s brown, it’s down?” Another scenario where that saying fits…

    Which 16ga O/U

When I grab a sub gauge, I sure like a more svelte feel to the gun…that’s 75% of the reason I choose to take one…many days it’s lots of carrying and a minimum of shooting…nice carrying something lighter and easier handling…

    ISO dog boot recommendations

I use gorilla tape at the top of the ones I get from dig booties.com…I probably lose one per 3-4 hours on average…I probably find 2-4 per season while hunting! 🍻🍻

    Training My Lab Puppy

My 7 month old pup just spent a month with the breeder/trainer i got her from (high caliber labs) and she’ll spend 2 months next spring there as well…my older dogs spent 2 months there as well at 1-1.5 years old…i think it helps a good deal, i probably don’t reinforce the way i should…😩

How many of you let birds go?

Over the 30+ years I’ve been pheasant hunting extensively, mostly in SD, many of those years in groups of 6-8, some hens have accidentally been shot, and I’ve seen an equal # hit power/phone lines and die, but 50-100x more or greater have been grabbed by dogs while hunkered in heavy cover...

    Training My Lab Puppy

My dogs aren’t like yours, that I know! That’s a compliment to you. But we manage…hunting 45+ days in the Dakota’s each season, we have lots of fun, and manage to shoot a few…I’ll be in ND as of this coming weekend with my 7 month old pup as well as my 2 older dogs…I love the country and...
