    CONFESS!

I gave up opening weekend here in SD about five years ago. Still go out for the resident season the weekend before though.

    Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation

I can let you guys know beginning of October. Headed out to chase antelope out in western SD first weekend of the month. Will drive on 34. I'm guessing they'll still have their checkpoints up.

Is SD shooting itself in the foot?

I can, how about pushing birds out of thermal cover in the middle of winter? You might get that rooster but the hens you pushed out just got more stressed and will have to use more of their stored energy reserves to keep warm. Thus coming through the winter in worse condition and having smaller...

Is SD shooting itself in the foot?

I will always believe that if you have bird numbers then you will have hunters show up. Put all that money from advertising into habitat. Seems like they are grasping at whatever they can to keep the small towns alive. That's great, until you run out of birds. Then the small towns wither away...

Is SD shooting itself in the foot?

Haymaker, why not? Why let the governor decide who should be on it. Wildlife belong to the general public. Why not let us decide who we put in charge of managing said wildlife. From the sounds of a lot of public opinion a majority of the residents don't agree with some of the choices they've...

Is SD shooting itself in the foot?

unfortunately they don't leave these decisions up to the people who actually went to school for this. These decisions are made by the game commission. Which is made up of people that have no business making wildlife decisions. It basically gets shoved down the gfp's throat. Always looking for...

    Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation

They've been closed since May. Don't see it changing anytime soon. Either drive north of the reservation or drive south of it. They're going to tell you that you going hunting is non essential.

    SD Public Land Poll

Around 90 to 95 percent on public. Depends on when the in laws and friends are done with harvest and what they invite me to hunt.

    Brood counts

All that summit was just a bunch of hot air. Nothing ever came out of it. Just the former governor, do nothing for the outdoors Daugaard, and his attempt to make it appear like he gave a crap about wildlife. Much like our current governor trying to make it appear as if they care about the...

    Brood counts

Imagine this. The state takes the 700K they're using for advertising and the 500K they're using for the useless bounty program and put it into habitat. 1.3 million a year for habitat. Imagine what good that could do for the pheasant population. If the numbers were good I can almost guarantee...

    Brood counts

See they eliminated doing the late summer brood counts today at the commission meeting. Can't say I ever paid a lot of attention to them because as a resident I still go every day I can. Find it funny that they eliminate them after they started showing decline in population for the last decade...

    Resident season 2018

Made it out for resident season today. Found some birds in light to medium cover. Got one group of around a dozen up that jumped up too far away. Got another group of around 20 and picked up one from that bunch. Followed that group and managed two more singles after breaking up the big group...

    My worst day afield

Saturday 10/28 started like any other Saturday during pheasant season for Asher and I. We were headed out to chase roosters like we do on every day off I have during the season. Exception for west river deer season. We got do a spot that had produced birds for us in the last couple years. She...

    Friends for life

Any of you guys watched this video yet? For me it sums up a lot of the reason I go hunting in the first place. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=927228917378512&id=170311893070222

    Last week observations.

Over the last week I have been out running the dog on various tracts of public land getting her tuned up for the upcoming season. We went through ten to 12 different spots where I have found birds throughout the years. Also scouted some new spots. Stayed away from some of my favorite tried and...

    Final outing

Made it out for my last hunt of the season yesterday. Always a sad feeling. Decided to try a new piece of public ground a friend told me about. Knee deep snow but the cattails were holding the birds. The dog and I broke up around two groups of twenty. After that we were able to get back on the...

    Dry grass

Wanted to give everyone a heads up if they are headed out for the opener and remind them to take caution as to where they are driving. The grass has grown very tall from the spring and summer rains. It has gotten extremly dry now and the fire danger is very high. Please pay attention to where...

    Dogs feet

After reading some of the recent threads I was wondering what are some things folks do to toughen up their dogs feet for hunting season. I know here in SD the sloughs as well as hunting in the snow can wreak havoc on a dogs pads. I personally have taken to going on jogs on gravel roads.
